My god, I hope you don't talk at the same speed as the message needs to be read, without some puctuation my head's going to explode reading that, re-post with some punctuation & I'll try to help you.

Regards Rob.

Ray.
I’m not usually one to throw stones in the spelling, grammar, and punctuation green house, because mine has a lot to be desired too, but Rob's right, this is extremely difficult to read. I also have trouble translating “text speak” into plain English.

Have you bought a Townace with problems at £4,550 or have you bought a Townace for £550?
If you have paid £4,500 then take it back now.
If you have only paid £550 then, depending on its general condition, you could have a bargain, albeit with a lot of work to put right all the problems.

Firing on only three cylinders, and a very bad smoke problem could be a blocked injector, or something more serious, like the gasket, head, piston, piston rings, or the block. If you remove the injectors and take them to a diesel specialist it will cost around the £100 mark to get them reconditioned. If this fails to remedy the problem, then it will be more serious. Any way you look at it, you will probably have to have them reconditioned sooner or later in order to pass the emissions test, so you wont loose out there.

2ct engines and heads are available from a number of sources, which are listed on the archives. Prices vary, but typically they range from £400 for reconditioned heads, to £1,000 for a complete reconditioned engine. You pay the money, so you take the choice.

Are you saying that the importer you mention is responsible for selling it to you? or just one that you know of?

Sorry about the grammar but I am not very good on the keyboard.

The Toyota didn't come from dealer mentioned. It was £550.

The injector checked out OK. I guess the head needs to come off. As it is accesible I will do the rings as well.
So, can anybody help with the torque settings for head bolts and conrods? Also are the timing marks difficult to align?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Ray.
Torque settings are a bit unusual because the bolts are stretch bolts, and you must fit new ones. Its something like, tighten to what ever Llbs is required, then loosen by 90° then tighten by 90°, then tighten again by 90°, and there are 18 of them that need to be tightened in a particular sequence. Its an over head Cam engine so it doesn't have Con rods.

If your going to undertake the work yourself, the very least you will need, is the RM025E engine manual.
Have a look on http://www.bbcspares.co.uk/products.htm Head gasket set £70 + bolts £40 + cost of reconditioned head @ £400 that adds up to £510. A replacement engine with a reconditioned head will cost £500. Both options are exclusive of delivery and vat of course.

Which ever option you choose, consider replacing the water pump whilst the engine is in pieces, or out of the car. Its only precautionary, but for less than £40 for an ADL replacement, it could save a lot of time if it fails in the near future.

Hi Ray/Dave your motor does have con rods. I think Dave doesn't realise you mean, piston connector rod and you want the bigend tighening torque, I presume, not tappet connector rods, as he rightly sayes overhead cam no tappet con rods.

Ah, your right Phil, I was thinking tappet not piston. I will look it up for you when I get home.

The manual says connecting rod cap x connecting rod is 47 ft-lb and the head bolts are 33 ft-lb +90° +90°
My sieve like memory is telling me that the instructions that came with the bolts stated 33 ft-lb -90° +90° +90° but the instructions will come with the new bolts, so follow them to the letter.

Just to let you know that the piston ring was broken! This caused a bit of ring to go up and down in the chamber and maybe a piece of piston (if it was not rebuilt before with a defective part).
Cylinder slightly scored, might be repairable.

Looking at all options for further progress.
Option 1; one new piston + ring
Option 2; complete set of rings + piston.
Option 3; rebore/cylinder liner + piston.
Option 4; secondhand engine (bottom half)
Option 5; recon engine

Bearing in mind engine ran on 3 cylinders easily

don't let that nim-wit near your townie!!!!!!! bought mine from car centre. 4 weeks later had to go back for a blown turbo. the guy at the car centre was great, dead helpful, apologetic and had it done at his expense and not under the warranty. arsehole at the garage stated "half a days work". went into rhyl, called back at the specified time only to be informed the head had gone and i couldn't have it back. okay, they lent me a pegout 405 estate (complete bag of spanners, it was well goosed) quoted me a week. 2 weeks later after various stories he told me the engine was porous and a replacement engine had been ordered. after nearly 6 weeks!!!!! i could collect it. so i run back down to prestatyn from oldham. and got my townie back, it's never been the same car since. somewhat underpowered and more rattles than soft-mick and often the bloody thing won't start (won't even turn over)unless the battery is at absolute top charge, this was september 2002, come spring/summer this year the aircon wasn't working (it did before he got his mits on it) thinking it just wanted re-charging after he'd stripped out the enigine i got a local guy in to charge it. turns out havf the bloody wiring hasn't been put back and there's allsorts of pipes etc just been left dangling which should have been clipped back. 3 months after that the water pump went, the engine has never sounded right since he had it. even with the turbo warning light on and the head suposedly gone it ran an absolute dream, now it has me constantly nervous about it's reliabilty

they're only my experiences of this guy, others may be happy with him, just be warned.

by the way, those two are actually part of the same company if you start digging around for info.

regards,
dave brandwood
