(Home) New owner who is confused

Hi all, i have just bought a townace on a J plate for £2000 it is very nice, very clean and exactly what i need. BUT all the talk of over heating, blown head gaskets at £1000 a go has got me VERY worried. I am fully capable of routine maintenance and services so thats not my main concern. Can some one give me a straight answer? are these things reliable? should i have bought an espace? ;) one more question, It is a petrol, and was told it had no overhead cam? it was a pushrod engine? so no cam/timing belt?? surely not!

Many thanks for your help, hope to see y'all at a Jam sometime!

Good choice of transport and a good price.
Most likely pushrod with chain drive timing chain.
3Y and 4 Y engine carb or injection.
Yes they are reliable. You only read the horror stories here. Please no swearing Esp*%*, nearly typed Ace there, indeed.
Petrol less likely to give problems. Also petrol engine easier to get hold off as it was fitted to lots of UK/Euro spec cars, so should be £'s cheaper.
Have a read of the archive's, all but the Diesel engine bits are relevant.
Are you going to be the first petrol Townace at a Jam?

Thanks Clive, i feel a lot better! i was beginning to think i had made a mistake in parting with the cash! The van is in super condition (it is the super extra? one) it has a lot of paperwork including recipts etc for a new Radiator so maybe the person who had it before me understood a bit about its weakspots? anyway thanks for the advice, i thought that all i would read would be the bad bits, as you never hear when things go right! (maybe we should start a new thread of 'positives only'?)
Hope we are the only petrol at the Jams! i like to be different (hence purchasing the thing!) when is the next one down south? (i am in deepest kent...)

PS sorry about the ESP*** reference..., wont happen again..

Thanks again

I'll probably run one at Brean in the spring.
There is talk of Dorset and South Devon ones.
Also the Woodvale (near Leverpool) one should be on if Paul is up to organising it again.
In the meantime happy motoring.

Hello there, as you may be aware i've just purchased a townace 1989 G'reg it has done 159,000 miles and it's a desiel. Can anyone tell me is this milage high for a townace? How many miles am i likely to get out of her, before she retires to the scrap heap, any ideas?

As you can tell i fell in love with the townie because of the way she looks (a bit wacky), rather than what's underneath the bonnet.

I am interested to find out how many miles you have all done in your Townies... fingers crossed your milage is a lot higher than mine...

Please post me all your reply's and i will look forward to hearing from you all...

Good luck all with many more miles to enjoy!

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

You mentioned Espace, they have thier own share of problems, namely gearbox trouble and an air intake that can suck water into the engine in flooded areas (Although this was earlier models, I don't know if newer ones have the same problem)
