Not familiar with your system, but previously have managed to take slack out of several older cars change.
Having a good nosey and getting the 'thinking cap' on usually works.
You can sometimes adjust at the right point or unbolt and reset where the rods attatch to the male end coming out of the gearbox (manual). If you do this leave it in 4th (if manual) so you have a reference point - most autos can be adjusted where the rods attatch to the selector mechanism on the gearbox etc. (set in 'park' when adjusting) - Some rods 'may' unclip to facilite grease packing - occasionally a 'suitable' (really worn) joint might be packed with a bit of shaped metal or something (shock, horror!) if it can be dismantled - but at the end of the day, if it can't be fixed then replacement is the next and longest lasting line of fire
If its manual you may wish to check the ball at the bottom of the selector stick
