(Home) Hand brake cable replacement

my 1990 master ace surf has just failed the mot on a weak n/side hand brake operation. upon investigation i found that the cable outer had failed where it passes through the rear most retaining clip - this is obviously why it wasn't working properly! anyway, i tried to remove the cable but found i was unable to gain access where the cable passes over the top of the fuel tank and there apears to be something holding it in place here. does anybody know if the cable can be removed and replaced without removing the fuel tank (sods law working here as i have a full fuel tank and don't have suitable container(s)to drain it).

incidentally i looked on the site for a diagram and couldn't seem to identify a one covering the two rear cable assemblies, is there one there somewhere?

thanks for any help on this.

Dave, I am not sure if you have to remove the tank (surely not?)but, if it is of any help, I will email two attachments (taken from the Toyota CD), which show the handbrake lever and front, single cable, also the "balance bar" and layout of the two rear cables. It might help as it shows the locations of various support brackets.

I removed one from my old Spacecruiser, I assume it is the same, without any trouble. May just need to jiggle it about a bit as I'm sure it just threads through guides. The new one should indicate any snagging points.

I seem to recall there being a bolted clamp right above the centre of the tank being the reason why I never replaced mine...

You have to remove the fuel tank, tried for hours to do it without, failed. about 4 hour job to take out and replace fuel tank when half full...best of luck...

I stand corrected.
I think I'd be tempted to just lever any clamp off and miss it out on reassembly, the other clamps will hold the cable in place.
