(Home) My 2c sounds like a beatle

Hi all,

1991 LiteAce, 180k km. 2C diesel, non turbo. So far it has been running without trouble. But recently I noticed, after every service (~2500-3000km) Engine sounds different. It sounds like VW Beatle's engine (like blrrr, not much, but noticeable and ugly for a diesel). Usually it disappear after couple of days. But after the recent service, now it has been a week, it still sounds the same. First I though it's a silencer leak, and when carbon deposits after a few 100km leak stops and sound disappears. But I was never able to find any leak so far. Even when I try to block silencer while running, I don't see any leaks. This sound comes only when I accelerate (when engine is loaded). When the engine reaches the accelerated speed, it disappears. One of my friends told me, it could be an injector problem.

Anyone has any ideas/experiences ?

Sorry for the lengthy letter.

Is the appropriate oil being used?
Has it had a new exhaust recently?
Another thought - has anyone previously used an 'extreme pressure' additive in the oil - and its now leaving the system
Could check fuel lines - are hoses secure (not drawing in air)?
Hows it breathing? Air filter clear?

You may also check the exhaust manifold and consider what jobs were done on its most recent service.
Is it possible something is loose and vibrating?

cracked exhaust manifold or failed gasket...

Everyone thinks its some exhaust or intake related noise and not injectors ?

Then its good :)

Yes I should check whether the Air filter is properly fixed and whether all exhaust joints are leak free.

I'll let all know if I fix it by any of this

Thanks for the responds

Hi all,

Just removed the silencer joint near the gearbox oilnut, put some asbestos thread and fixed it. Difference in engine noise was remarkable. All these years I have run with the leak (untill it became notisable) and always thought its just engine noise.

I'm glad to hear that it's nothing serious and potentially too expensive. A family friend with an Estima said that his was making a bit of noise, and I just pointed out that it was just the way the engine was positioned.
I was a bit confused when I first saw this thread. I wandered if your Liteace sounded like John, Paul George, or Ringo!
