You need to look out for the same problems as with the Diesels. The petrols are a little less prone to the cracked head problem, but still can overheat due to the design of the front end on the Townie. Other than that they are all pretty bullet proof. However you do need to give them some TLC, let's face it, most are 10 years plus old & need to be looked after, otherwise enjoy you excellent vehicle. The only other thing to worry about is the huge fuel bills with the petrol, with the diesels turning in 30+ MPG the petrol is quite thirsty.

We're thinking of buying a petrol townace and have been told that it can run quite happily on LPG. Does anyone have any information about this please?

I spoke to a stall holder at the Woodvale Ace Jam. He was confident that any petrol engine can run on LPG some require more expensive mods than others. Have chat with your local agent.

Hello Gordon
More people tend to look at new threads rather than old ones, so it would have been better to have started a new thread.

Over what sort of time scale is the expansion tank emptying?
Have you tried a new radiator cap yet?
What colour is the coolant that’s left?

i also have a petrol townace - 2l super extra 1993. 8 seats, since january. love it so far. not comfortable with a diesel, but wish i had 4wd. the kids love it. all arguments have stopped! considering aquiring a cheap 4wd diesel for fun and camping, and wondering if my 2wd can be converted using bits of an old 4wd.

i'm in todmorden w yorks, but sometimes visit bucks in school holidays 01706 839656.

Conversion from 2WD to 4WD, will require the whole suspension being changed, not a viable option in my opinion.

Of course it could be done - but at what expense and trouble.

Best idea is to find a cheap 4X4.
They can be had with petrol too if you are really scared of diesel, but trust me (and many others here) that diesel isn't really anything to be scared of!

The other option is to find a purpose built 4X4, that is if you don't need all the seats.
The Ace surprises me everytime we take it off-road, really quite capable if you are careful, but it will break more easily than a Landrover for instance.

You might get a better deal in a hilux dual cab or similar, and it will be better for off road fun - but obviously nowhere near as nice to drive generally.

You may have noticed that the Govt. is to eliminate the tax advantages on LPG over the next 3 years because it doesn't offer enough environmental benefits. This was in the last budget. I guess that will stop LPG conversions in their tracks.

Suspect the details were either left out or recorded wrong at first registration. The V5 does say if any thing needs amending let them know.
