(Home) Auto box not starting

Hi all
Re: 91 Townace 2.0ltr Turbo auto.
I have owned her for a year now and have taken her all over the UK and France (17000 miles) without any problems at all, I have serviced her at 3000 miles ints.
over the last month she has sometimes not started(hot or cold) but if i rock the gearshift by pressing the red button she will start. could this be a micro switch problem and if so where may i find it.

Many thanks Dave

It thinks your trying to start it in drive . take plastic cover off the gear selector and you will see the micro - just check its secure - any wear in the system will easily upset its fine tolerances , failing that ,its time to get a new switch - toyota , rs components, farnells, cpc are all good for micros

one parting note you might bear in mind is this does have a resemblence to the mysterious volt drop to the solenoid fault which is well documented in the ace answers

I have had this prob on other autos....
Resolved (assuming above ok) by slightly adjusting the selector rods where they attatch to gear box

The inhibitor switch is at the side of the tranny. It's either under the selector lever or on the opposite side, can't quite recall. But it's easy to take off and clean if necessary. First off tho, check for continuity between the two heavy wires when in N & P. The selector cable might need a slight adjustment, or the switch need moved slightly.

Hi all, MY 96 Liteace is having the same problem. I take plastic cover off gear selector but could not figure out which is the inhibitor or micro switch. Please help. By the way, how do you adjust selector rod. Thanks

Bill

Guys, the inhibitor is on the side of the tranny. Trust me on this. Where the selector cable attaches to the tranny (notice the elongated hole in the lever for cable adjustment...) there's an alloy housing with a large cableform coming out the top, held on by phillips screws. That's the inhibitor. You must remove the selector lever to remove it...
