(Home) Brakes that dont

Hi all,

Toyota SpaceCruiser 1989, GL Auto

OK, I changed my front brakes pads this morning - no problem at all, only took about 40 minutes.

Did not touch anything else - so why dont the sodding things work. 5 hours and still cant find a damm thing wrong. Bled the braking system, used two complete cans of fluid, bled it so much, had the paramedics out trying to give the damm thing a transfusion.

The brake pedal is spongy as hell, I have fitted loads of brake pads to other vehicles, bled brakes loads and loads of times - so can anyone tell, is the spacecruiser different or is it completely broken and needs to go to the mechanic so I can pay lots and lots of money out just before Christmas. If anyone can help me, I would very much appreciate it. As you can tell I am not a happy bunny tonight - got wet and cold and my legs and back aches, banged my head at least a dozen times and they still dont work.

Help please

best regards

Did you also bleed the load sensor near rear axle?

There will also be the bedding in period for the pads.
What system/equipment did you use to bleed?
Did you loosen the nipples when winding back the pistons? Don't know if this is relevant (or correct) but a fitter once told me that some vehicles can be damaged if the nipples are not opened to relieve the pressure

It is possible that during the "bleeding" process, the master cylinder piston has travelled to a portion of its bore that is damaged and this could cause the seal to be ruined. It might be worth refitting the old pads to see if the problem goes away! Good Luck

funny enough i changed my front pads yesterday and was very suprised how easy it was. I didn't undo any bleed screws and with tongue in cheek my brakes are fine.i just took the fluid tank cap off when i pushed the piston back.
fluid level is ok, and brakes work fine with a 20 mile test run
strange vehicles these
good luck david

Check you have all the pad retainer springs fitted correctly. Are the pads the exact same surface shape? Could they be catching on the previously unused area (outer or inner) of the disc edge? Did you bleed the rear ones as well as the LSV?

Guess what I found the problem, well being honest a friendly mechanic did. One of the pistons on the near side front wheel had air in it. He clamped both pipes just off the pistons and then opened the bleed valves and pushed them back and out it came. Tightened up the valves, had me press the pedal few times and all fixed. Easy when you know what it is. He says that sometimes you get air on one of the pistons and it just gets stuck there, no matter how much you bleed and this is the quick fix for it.

Thanks all

Hi All,
Just bought a townace today and would like to ask a question.
Whilst braking at any speed, there is a noticable "pulsing" from the pedal which is periodic with speed.
If I drive slow the pedal raises and drops slowly whilst pressing gently on it.
it does stop fine but seeing I have just bought it, prior to fitting a stereo, I would rather get my priorities right!
Cheers,
Spence

Spence,
You should have started a new thread rather than tacking on the end of this one - may well have been overlooked.
If you bought from a dealer take it back.
Otherwise have a look through the archives on AceAnswers as this has been discussed before.
