what is the Warning light which is a plan view of the van with its rear light shinning which remains lit after the engine has started? and what do i do about it.

Possibly a brake/tail light out. Same thing used to happen in my Honda.

Have you checked Ace Answers / Ace Handbook / Dashboard & Electrics ? Sound like the door open/tailgate unlocked which we get used to being on if you've unlocked all the doors. But you don't say what vehicle you have.

It is my Fathers in laws car it is 1989 2.0 auto diesel Liteace, the light far left of the dash looks like a it is indicating the rear lights are on. It comes on when you turn on the igniytion sometimes goes out when you turn on the ignition, then comes back on again after starting the car. It doesn't appear in the diags in the handbook/electrics section for some reason
rear tail gate sounds plausable
