(Home) O/d "dummy" light

There is a dummy light showing on my 97 Toyota Camry LE that I don't understand ( Maybe that's why they refer to it as a "dummy" light ) how and why it's constantly on. It says, "O/D OFF". I don't remember shutting the overdrive off. Does the O/D just go out on its own or is it something I may have done? Thanks.

can't say for the camry but if using the same logic as the Townace - the ideal/default position for the overdrive is in the ON position. On is good because you get an extra gear which means better fuel economy. If you should switch the O/D off for any reason, you need reminding that it is off because OFF is bad longterm for the converse reason. So I guess you must have switched the O/D button off at some time. Switch it back on and all should be well.

Oh and the O/D button should be on the gearstick or very closeby. Check your owners handbook for a pic.

Thanks, Ian, for the timely reply. I'll check it out.
