(Home) Dash board removal

I have a very early townace petrol (it is on a J plate but i think it is more of a C (1984ish) it looks just like a UK Space Cruiser of that time only better equipped! and i have a water leak into the front drivers footwell (rainwater not coolant this time hehe!)i can see water dripping over the clutch pedal and from a seam above the acellerator. it is only a drip but it is enough to soak the carpet and on further inspection make lots of rust under the dash!

has anyone got a drawing of how the dash comes out? or has anyone got any idea how i can get to it fron the outside? i have sealed the windscreen, and plugged every hole i can find, please help!

Thanks
Terry

Terry,
The online manual on the US site www.toyotavans.org covers the dash removal for the left hand drive version (I assume you have the shelf on the dash under the central air vents?), so yours will be the other way around. If you have no shelf then you have the later Townace type of dash, how to do it on Ace answers.
It is a matter of take your time, look for hidden clips and beware old plastic snaps!
Have you checked that any drainage fron sun roofs etc are clear/that it is not the window washer leaking (pray not as that is more than the dash out!), leaking in around the headlight - the inside access panel loose?
Now if you want some wellies I can do a nice right foot, dog ate the left!

Cheers Clive

as far as it can be called a 'shelf' there is a little slot about the size of a radio, under the radio! so i guess it is :) there are nuts along the top of the dash, just under the screen i assume they are the last to come off.

and as for MORE than a dash removal, if the darn washer IS leaking then, i will be carrying a spray bottle!

as for the wellies, i think the loan of a canoe would be better :)

cheers

If it's the same as the shape in your photo, it could be up to an '89 model, after that they had slightly smoother lines at the front & more integrated headlamps. Someone pulled the wool over the DVLA's eyes by declaring it on a J plate. Have a look at the build code on the plate below & infront of the driver's seat & tell us the code & we can decipher that into a build year/month.

Regards Rob.

I can see from the instrument cluster that it is the older stick up type, not the later all in one smoothed out type - if that is the same as yours then the US manual will be the one.
Note the two air intakes next to the headlights, not found on later models.

Assuming its not been ringed, enter your chassis number at the site below for date of manufacture
Hope this helps

Jeez! i hope its not a ringer! i got it from a dealer! (but that dont hold much water i guess, no pun intended!) my one has the air intakes on the front so i am assuming it is the older version, and i guess someone did pull the wool over the dvla's eyes! Looking at the Temp Guage mod, it is the 'classic' setup

Thanks to all of you

Are you the first UK owner if the Ace?
If yes take it back to the dealer and let him sort it out.
If no, still go back and get a refund for the extra 5/6 years.
Should you have an accident it may be a wriggle out clause, so best get the DVLC updated.
A bonus is that body spares from Spacecruisers may be easier to get.
