(Home) Core plugs for 2ct engine block, 4x4 1989

Hello

Some of you may already know that my ace is going in to my local garage to renew water pump, cam belt, and i am waiting for bbc spares to send me the parts,i have resisted driving the van due to this slow water leak i was just looking for my voltage regulator and i noticed below the diesel pump on the block was a rusty core plug with water slowly coming out of it (on a cold engine)so under pressure God knows, just spoke to bbc spares and he told me not something he keeps and in fact he has never been asked for a core plug for a 2ct engine, am i right in thinking that my 2ct engine is the same engine in a toyota carina.

any one know if there is a part number for a core plug or the size.

I have a masterace 4x4 2ct 1989 Q-CR30G-PEZX

Measure the old core plug and go to your motor factors, they keep a selection in different sizes. I believe you want either 18 or 30mm depending on location...

Dennis. There are four core plugs on the 2C block. Three are along the injection pump side of the engine and the first of these is directly under the pump. The fourth plug is on the exhaust manifold side of the block. The part No is 96411-4300 for engines from 1988 to 1992 and your local Toyota dealer should be able to show you these on the parts screen. They are "dished" and are described as "Plug, tight, for cylinder block". It may be that the rusty look, on your suspect plug, is just where the small leak has dribbled down and you might be able to "pean" the edge of the plug (in situ) to make it watertight again. Getting these plugs out, without destroying them, is very difficult, otherwise I would remove one from my scrap block and send it to you. You could try drilling and tapping the plug, putting a bolt and some sort of puller onto it, cleaning it up, "spreading" the dished edge, and re-fitting it with a bolt and sealing washer left in the drilled hole. However, the much better method is to obtain a new plug and the dealer ought to be able to help here.
Yes, I think that the 2C engine was fitted to various Carina models and, again, your dealer should be able to advise.

Thank you dave/john,

the core plug that was leaking was bigger then 18mm and it did look about 30mm,I will take a copy of the above posting to my local toyota dealer first thing monday.

i had both rads recored 6 months ago and she still had a very small leak but could not see, its funny that 2 week ago i put in a strong antifreeze mix 50/50 which had a good anti-corrostion and suddenly the leak gets 20 times worse, could it be the anti-corrostion at work and opening up leaks that have self sealed.

i will let you know how i get on,should have the new water pump from bbc spares this tuesday and work on my van should start same week,i am taking the whole family away for aweek down in cornwall on easter holidays (7 of us )which will be one of many outings this year and i want the ace in tip top form.

Dennis. Thanks for your acknowledgement. Yes, antifreeze/inhibitors are well known to have an annoying "search" facility and they will find a pin hole where ordinary water will not. In no way contradicting David's excellent advice as I think his core plug size advice was given from memory but, I was able to measure the core plugs on my scrap block and they are approx 34/35 mm dia.

john

cheers,i am getting together a box of material for my garage with the help of bbc spares, water pump, stat, cam belt, all 3 fan belts, water bypass pipe(rusted)oil/fuel fliters, brake pads, rad cap,and now need to add core plugs i will see what my local toyota dealer have and i will buy a sellection of plugs to be on safe side.by the way do you know where my voltage regulator is siturated on my ace,i look behind the glove box but could see it(hoping it would be on display,i did'nt look up behind the dash thinking the jap's would'nt put it there or is it )

No contradiction, John. Of the five plugs listed in the cd, only two are sized. Your vernier caliper beats my incomplete reference hands down!

Advice still stands tho. Measure, then go to the factors. Dread to think what Toyota will charge in comparison, and they'll have to order in...
try www.pearlproducts.co.uk, most factors carry their items.
