(Home) Gearbox had extra spring

Hi everyone,i had a problem with the autobox not getting past 10mph up hill,my Dad had borrowed it so i told him check the oil and flter after advice from here.He told me plenty of oil and it's sat off road for a few months. He then told me he had removed the sump which he left off, etc.
So i got the manual and took the valves out to clean, when i put them back together there was a spring left over.He is positve the spring was in the low crawl valve which has a flat square plate and 2 bolts securing it.This spring shouldn't be there,it was too long and on the outside of the valve against the plate.I think it was put there to fix a problem of some sort.
I have left it out and have everything back together, filled it up with oil.Now it's working but it creeps too much, what i mean is it moves like you are accelerating even though it is only at idle.Maybe faster than walking speed almost straight away, there is no heavy thump, just normal operation,
If anyone can help i would be very greatful,
P.S. i now know that when my Dad checked the oil he did it when the engine was off,so it didn't have enough oil in it,which i think was the original problem? THANKS to anyone who replies,in advance ;)

Paul, your reference to getting the manual has me wondering what sort of car this is?

If the spring came out, it needs to go back in. Was it just a spring, or was there a ball bearing or end cap as well?
If the spring is larger than that on the shift valves, then it could be from the Primary regulator valve, the lockup signal valve, the pressure relief valve, or even the parking lock pawl.

Doh. The board ate my first reponse...

Yup, you'll need to tell us the model and year of the vehicle, and which manual you're working from. Dimensions of the spring might help also.

Hi again, thanks for the quick response.
The model of Toyota is a Townace Super Extra Limited 2.0ltr TD,J reg.It is completely standard but has a tow bar fitted and has been used, not sure how often or what it towed. When i bought it (about a year ago)from two joiners i noticed wood shavings on floor and seats,
Taking it for a test drive i noticed it was a little slow from take off,but no noises and very smooth and quiet.Having no rust anywhere on it i parted with my money and was impressed on the road home,(comparing it to my other Spacecruisers),
Only when my Dad borrowed it did it develope a problem.I guess about 200 miles since i bought it,when on the way home from work he struggled home at walking speed up the hills, that was in October,
I am sure he ran low on gear oil up the hills,so he got back to his house and it's still in his driveway(never moved untill yesterday),he took sump of looking for the filter, also bolts from the valve body.He said that when he took off the plate for the (Low-coast shift valve) a spring came popping out at high speed,
I downloaded the Workshop Manual from http://www.toyotavans.org/ ,for a '87 van and printed it.I don't know how to take an image and email ,sorry.
So if you see for yourself it is on page AT-78,top left corner of page.from left to right there is two bolts then a plate and the valve, the spring was inbetween the plate and the valve, pushing the valve inwards against the small spring that connects onto the 1-2 shift valve on the other side,
The spring free length was 38mm and had file marks on each end.there was no paint or colour on it and it was too big in diameter too come from the valves about 10mm in dia.hope this helps you to help me,
Thanks again for taking the time and helping;)

There are two possibilities here; the spring that you have is not the spring that exited at high speed, or that it does in fact fit between the end of the low coast shift valve and the retaining plate.
It may be that in order to rebuild this, the 1-2 shift upper and lower valves have to be removed first, so that the low coast shift valve, spring and plate can be fitted first. It may give a bit of extra inward travel to hold the spring in place whilst the plate is fitted, then refit the smaller spring and the 1-2 shift upper and lower valves afterwards.

Now, what YEAR is the vehicle? Is it 2wd or 4x4?
According to my info, the spring goes in before the valve in that location. What about the reverse sequence valve, beside it under the same plate. Some versions have a spring on it...

If you give me the exact model and year (VIN would help) I'll email you the exploded drawings off the parts cd...

The townace is registered (declared manufactured 1989), VIN cr21-0093473 ,no other useful info on it's reg. docs,
I haven't tested it on the road yet due to a driving ban and no road tax. it is 2wd.The plate that holds in the valve has a small indent and i think the spring has not originally been fitted there by Toyota. All the other valves have there springs in place. The low-coast valve has a pointed end and looks likely to have made the indent in the plate. This makes me think the spring has been put there to solve some problem with the rest of the valves.
I'm not too bothered if the creeping can't be corrected as long as the gearbox will be reliable. It would be nice to know why it was tampered with, maybe to help towing or maybe to solve harsh engagement,I just don't know,
Thanks again for your help and quick response

Different subject, if it's been declared as manufactured in 1989, why isn't it on an G or H reg, J reg would suggest a 90-91 manufacture year. CAn't understand why the DVLA have allowed that.

Regards Rob.
