The best advise given to me by dave Miller, when I was trying to pass an emissions test, was to find a local Diesel specialist. Get them to quote on reconditioning the injectors and setting up the diesel pump. It can be a bit pricey, but you could fiddle around for years, and still not get the ideal setting.
You should use some sort of Diesel additive in your fuel if you are using the normal Low, or ultra low sulphur Diesel. It needs some additional lubricants to improve the burn, but if you live near a B5 Bio-Diesel out let, use that instead. Its more pricey, but the MPG is so much better.

The Fuel system page of the online Ace (Answers) Handbook has some pictures and details of what to turn, where they are, and how careful to be.
