(Home) Auto transmission "slipping"

We made it there and had a fantastic time. There was enough room for both suitcases between the front seats and the middle row reversed. It's great with the back seats facing each other - love it!

At one point I thought we weren't going to make it back as we have now developed a strange transmission problem. (this is a '92 Super extra 2WD turbo diesel automatic btw) After around 2 hours of continous driving the gears start to slip. Steve was driving along at 100k and the revs went crazy and it sounded like it had slipped down a gear or two. It was okay if he went along at constant speed on the flat but if he took his foot off or accelerated the revs would zoom up then drop to zero and the gears were changing all over the place.
I really though we were going to have to use our breakdown cover, but we stopped for lunch and when we set off again it was back to normal. It didn't start playing up again until we were nearly home and steve couldn't get out of the lower gears. We've only done short journeys since and it's been absolutely fine.
Anyone got any ideas? TIA

Hi Hanna
It sounds like your transmission fluid got a bit hot. When you stopped for lunch it cooled enough to work ok for a while.
The ATF may need changing, or it may be a sign of overheating. How was the temperature gauge? Take it in to an automatic specialist and ask them to check and replace the fluid. When they remove and clean the filter, they should inspect the sump for signs of ware on the valves. It should cost around £80 for this.
How was Micky by the way?

That's brilliant - will get it looked at when the brake pads are changed next week. Temp guage was fine the whole time - right in the middle so I hope we don't have an over heating problem. Kids & mickey can be seen at link below :o)
