(Home) Rainwater leaks in bodywork

My trusty Hiace has sprung a leak. I think that it must be from the windscreen seal as there is evidence of water droplets on the throttle pedal every morning.

Looking at the front of the van I can't see anywhere else that would allow water to permeate. I was going to leave it till spring but there's enough sloshing about to need a rapid fix.

So before I call the screen guys I wanted to know if my conclusions were right. Anyone else had this bother?

Cheers, Col (in wellies).

There was a similar thread recently where the fault was traced to the drivers window. I think seal between the door and window was missing, and that led to rain entering the door panel and filling it up until it spilled over into the cabin. If its getting in through the windscreen, I would expect to see rust, somewhere round the rubber seal. It could also be getting in around the light units.
Hope that helps

Maybe the rubber seal around the screen, try Rain Seal, I think that is what it is called, dries clear and is easy to apply.
Also check any drain points from sun roof/roof panels if fitted. If blocked the water takes the easy route, maybe down the side of the screen?

Hi Colin
Following on from Dave and Clives advice,I would also have a go with some mirrors and a torch to try and identify the source of the drip.
The screen wash tubes, though not directly over the gas pedal are routed behind the dash.
Would also check the security of where the wipers spindles go through the shell (mine were very loose on purchase), and the security of the external washer nozzles themselves.
Suppose the beauty of clear sealant is that you can do a tidy job if careful (nothing lost!) - but if it doesn't work then at least you haven't shelled out on a new screen/rubbers only to find the problem is elsewhere.
Good luck, get the dental mirrors and torch out!

There is one other possibility - do you have hte aerial mounted on the 'a' pillar beside the windscreen?

On my old Tarago (Spacecruiser) we had a leak very similar to yours, which was traced back to the pillar mounted aerial. The water was finding it's way in there, and out on the grab handle mounted inside the 'a' pillar.

Another option - I'm not even sure the Hiace has the aerial - or the inside handle for that matter!

Dave.

hi there what about a leaking heater matrix.

Thnaks people for the advice. I shall be checking things over this w/end unless we're snowed under! The only one I know that isn't the culprit is the aerial, as it's part of the sunroof!

Cheers chaps.

I have a similar problem.
Sometimes I open the tailgate fully and water, 20ml or so, very annoyingly falls down from trim by the top (i.e. nearest the hinges) corner of the rear window.
As far as I can tell the tailgate metalwork is completely dry inside and it's condensation that has collected inside the top section of the pull-off beading surrounding the window. It's worst in cold weather but depends on having had something damp inside the car previously.

I have water soaking into the passenger carpet... god knows from where, as I can`t see anything dripping in the rain when I sit in there. It`s mainly on the bottom carpet (the fixed one), but also has some soaking into the rubber-backed carpet on top.
MasterAce Surf..... any suggestions? I`ll be off to find that clear-fill soon :)

I had that problem on my Space Cruiser.
Turned out to be the drain hose from the sun roof.
It goes down through a hole in the floor by the passenger's feet. Mine had been kicked out of it's hole and was depositing water onto the floor instead.

I had the same problem as Gary.(same van,Masterace.)
Turned out to be rubber gromits missing from the pipes that come up through the floor & go into the cool box.
Water would splash up & the carpet would soak it up!!!
