my 1990 2.0 td townie has over heated for the first time in 2 years .I noticed that the coolant in the expansion bottle is nearly black and with the rad cap off i can see a lot of bubbles coming out ,is this a clear indication of head gasket failure.Any views please,Dave.

Yup, stuffed. Black= oil or soot, neither of which should get near the cooling system...

i have been down this road like so many others and you have to consider not that your head gasket has blown but why,i made the mistake of just having my head gasket replaced and did not look for the reason that made the gasket blow,in my case it was my bottom rad was blocked (4x4 masterace)and less then a year later the head blow again,i had both rads removed and recored and a brand new head from toyota fitted,at the momemt she in the garage having all her core plugs renew and is due for a electric conversion next week.

That is a very good point raised by Dennis, but its worth bearing in mind that sometimes the head gasket does fail on its own, particularly if its the fabric type rather than the metal laminate type.
If the coolant is black, there is a good possibility that the head is cracked as well. Make sure that the garage you use gets it pressure tested and checked for warping as well.
At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, it would be worth considering changing the water pump, thermostat and thermostat O-ring at the same time. An ADL replacement water pump is less than £40 and will save hours of labour if it goes in the near future.
