This may sound like an obvious question but why do you need a new engine?

driving down the road other day when the header tank light came on. filled it up drove it again - engine using water. flushed system through, kept a pint of the mucky water when it had settled there was 3/4'' of soot in the bottom of the bottle. looks like cylinder head gasket or head gone. so now going to take van to diesel fitter and he will say £500 to fit new gasket pressure test engine, skim head etc etc. and so i am looking to see if it is cheaper to fit an engine that doesn't use water instead of diesel! qed!"!!

Lisa,

i have a 4x4 masterace 1989 2ct engine,i had her since 1997,i blow my head gasket 3 yrs ago and i had the gasket renewed,it blow about 6 months later and i had a reconditioned engine fitted,a year later the head gasket blow again,so i was now thinking that the problem was not the engine and i got my garage to check the cooling system and he found my bottom rad was blocked,i had both rads recored and a brand new head from toyota fitted (head cost £650)you have to check the cooling system to make sure its 100%.

i think i paid £1200 for my recondition engine,it will be worth checking the cooling system for any faults/leaks,get the system pressure tested, make sure the rads are clear and fit a new water pump/cam belt.

if you go for a recon engine from bbc spares then make sure the cooling system not at fault as you may well find the head blowing again.

Yup, that sounds like a gasket with the possibility of a cracked head as well.
Second hand engine from BBC spares is £450 plus carriage plus vat on engine and carriage. Reconditioned head from www.ukcylinderheads.co.uk is about the same as BBC spares, but sometimes they are cheaper than advertised on their website, but there's still carriage and vat on the head and carriage. New head from Toyota is somewhere around £500 or £600.

A while back now BBC spares were advertising a reconditioned 2CT engine for £1200, but I don't see it on their website any more. Its much of a muchness I suppose. A recon engine is the most expensive, but less labour to fit. Second hand engine is the same labour cost, but it has some mileage on it already, so how long will it last? Replacing the head with reconditioned head is cheaper cost, but more labour. Replacing the head with a new one is about half way to a reconditioned engine, but more than halfway on the cost.

Last year I replaced a cracked head with a reconditioned one from UK Cylinder heads. The total cost was around £1,000 but I also had the injectors reconditioned at £100, replaced the water pump for £36, spent £80 on a pressure test to the duff head, new gasket set £70, and new head bolts £30. My mechanic was also cheap, only charging £200 for two and a half days labour.
