The 4 wheel drive activation switch in the townace appears to be electric over vacumme the solenoid is clicking behind the panel in the rear but not activating the gears ..Does any body have any extra info on the mechanics of this setup ,as mine stopped working today ,was working yesterday?

Are you sure it's not engaging, might just be the bulb...
But if not, is the vacuum line blocked? There should be a vacuum at the reservoir under the rear floor. Then, the valves switch that vacuum between the two sides of the actuator diaphragm- one side to engage, one to disengage. Check all that out before worrying about the mechanics.

Oh, and you are selecting with the handbrake off, in neutral, and rolling gently if that doesn't engage?

Might sound silly but have you engaged the hub locks on the front wheels ?

The engine was recently replaced and the apprentice routed the vacumme line over the fan belt and after 3000k it wore through ,hard to see as it is under the drivers seat ,but an easy fix ,thanx all for your responses
