can anyone help me.....
i have a faulty servo and led to believe its a very expensive job as the part itself is an expense...

Diesel Townaces don't have a servo. Vacuum is generated from the gizmo on the alternator. I'm sure others that possess a memory will provide more detail.

BBCspares do a secondhand one for £65 or £95 for a recon.

Uhh, the servo is the bit behind the master cyl, Ian, so they definitely DO have one. Difference is that in a diesel, there's no vacuum at the intake so a vacuumm pump (built into the front of the alt.) is required...

Steve, you'd be wise to confirm the vac pump is working OK before condemning the servo. Bugger to get to, the servo- the dash might have to come out...

Sorry. Must have got hold of the wrong end of the stick. Didn't think there would be room for one behind the master cylinder.

So you can see it is labour intensive - upper dash off, lower dash off, master cylinder off, brake and clutch (if fitted) brackets and connections out, then you can get to disconnect the servo, put plasters on knuckles, get fluid out of eye, you get the picture?
Don't know about servo's enough, but suspect there is a service kit.
Suggest you follow the advice on checking the vac pump is working first.

Steve, what symptoms are you getting that suggest a servo problem?

- (#8438) chris turner, 10 Feb 04 16:56

hi chris the symptoms i am getting are going round corners the brake warning light comes on+-when stopping on first touch of the pedal the vehicle stops well but take ya foot off the brake pedal then press it again and pedal seems hard brake warning light is on again.

Steve. If the light which is coming on is the brake fluid level light (the same light as the "handbrake on") surely, the fluid reservoir level is low ? Have you checked it ?

- (#8438) John Davis, 16 Feb 04 15:24

Are you sure the fluid is topped up (re: warning light on cornering/braking)?
May be worth having all the fluid renewed and the system fully bled (re: pedal feel)
I would guess these actions may solve things, but dont delay in topping up the fluid.
Low fluid may be just pad/shoe wear, but do scout round looking for leaks etc. just in case

thanks chaps will get new pads and renew brake fluid and bled ----- , brake fluid visualy looks fine .

Remember that there's a vacuum switch for the warning light too- I'd guess the vacuum pump is failing to produce good vacuum, or you've a leak. The Servo used more vacuum than the other accessories, so hard pedal and light on after one application of the brake sounds like a vacuum problem OK. Check the hose at the front of the alternator to the body for splits and leaks...

The symptom of a servor not working is the brake pedal is very hard, with very little travel and no stopping power. I discovered this on a petrol powered mitsubishi that overheated so badly that all the valves had to be replaced and the vacuum connector on the inlet manifold became blocked up. After rebuilding the cylinder head I went to stop at the end of the drive and discovered the problem.
