(Home) Oil soaked spark plugs on 2.0 EFI ace

Hi all. My 1989 2.0 EFI Royal Lounge is now at last on the road in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA. It was exported to the States late last year and has taken until now to legalise and register it. I have been running it for a couple of days and had noticed that it was not right. Today I gave it a full engine service and when removing the spark plugs I found that the middle two plugs were soaked in oil around the outside of the plug. I can not see where the oil is coming from. Any ideas? The rubber boots covering the spark plugs were dry and free of oil.
Lastly, I am unable to locate a oil filter. Will a filter from another Toyota fit and if yes which? I managed to get a air filter to fit which is from a Fiat.

Leaking rocker cover? Spilt some filling? I assume the business end is ok?
Clean it off and see if it comes back.
What engine is it 3y 4Y? Once you have than there should be a cross match. The Toyotavans.org may be a good place to ask. Best of luck.
Turning heads with funny import?

Clive. You are correct, it is a leaking rocker cover gasket but it is a mystery how the oil got onto the plugs without any oil trace on the rubber boots covering the plugs. The business end is fine and it is a 3y engine. I have replaced the plugs and resealed the gasket and all now seems fine. I am turning heads with the Townie and I have even had an offer of $20.000 dollars from a neighbour. At that price I am tempted to sell but where in the U.S.A. could I find a similar vehicle to replace it. I have solved my oil filter problem. My father is going to ship me a couple of filters from the U.K. Got to go now, going out in the Townie to turn more heads. Bill.

The Toyota Van was sold in the US with the 3Y engine - although most are the 4Y - so the filters should be available.
Don't tell them it's a TownAce - they won't know what you are talking about - tll them it is a 'Van' with a 3Y engine.
It may be different, but I would be surprised.

They are not unheard of, just hard to find - and the guys on the toyota Vans websites would love to hear from you.
I'll try to find the links and post them.

Here is one.

(but there seems to be little activity here - maybe e-mail Roy direct - he'd love to find out more!)

Glad you have got to the bottom of your oil problem Bill, but $20,000 is more than £10,000. I would bite his arm off and import another one direct from Japan.
