(Home) Tickover/idling unreliable (Spa)

i have fitted a recon carb to my 2lt d reg space cruiser
when in park or neutral ticks over at 1000 rev
when in drive ticks over at about 750-800
when driving and slow down for lights, islands and such the engine cuts out
it did not do this before what have i done wrong there are more breather pipes now as alot of the pipes were cut and blocked off and have now been re conected (i think in the right place) thank you

Does it re-start straight away and tick over ok ?
Try disconnecting the fuel cut off solenoid to see if it cuts out, if that solves the cutting out then the vac pipes are connected wrongly/something blocked.
Tick over a little high but some like it this way to overcome rattles shakes etc.

it might seem silly but which is the fuel cut of selenoid I only had to undo four nuts to replace the carb I just managed that

and how do I slow the tickover (just starting to do my own repairs)

thank you

You should have a single wire electrical connection to the carb, on the end of this is the FCS.
Now if you have just fitted the carb without setting it up your best bet is to get a tune up, as no doubt mixture is also off the mark.
Where abouts in the world are you?

I am in telford
only one man will tune a space cruiser around here he spent ages on the old crb trying to get it right.
at the back of the carb ther is a block connecter with 3 wires coming off in to the carb I disconected this and still had the same problem
it starts straight away but sometimes the revs die down and engine cuts off.

Long shot - fuel starvation, is the fuel filter bunged up? More evident as a sudden lack of power while driving but may not be helping here. If you had been in Bristol I would have popped round.

another silly question if the fuel filter is the round things (one at front one at back )I may have them on upside down which way up do they go?

ok fuel filter is under car found out through other questions on board local car parts told me the things i described are in line filters

I have fitted filter (and new tail gate) is there a cut off for petrol before filter (eyes and mouth full of petrol) still same problem

Cut off is on the carb. I think the carb just needs a bit of setting up, best done via a tune up in my opinion. Does the replacement have the little glass window? If yes this should always show a fuel level, window is on the front of the carb about the size of a ten pence bit.
Well done on the tailgate.

could the choke be staying on if so how do i turn it off

thank you

A stuck open choke would show a high tickover and stalling. Working from memory the autochoke operating lever looks like a small rod that connects to the fast idle cam. Take the air cleaner connection of off the carb and check the choke flap opens up, is yes then there is the second lower flap. Both should pivot under careful use of a screwdriver down the barrel, note careful!
Start the engine from cold and watch what moves, once warm check that the fast idle cam moves back and no longer touches the accelerator linkage.
