(Home) Glow plugs

Hi guys.My liteace 2.0td 1992,has no power to the glow plugs, the last few mornings with it being really cold shes struggled to start.I have checked the glow plugs with a volt meter ,no voltage showing. The solenoid under the drivers seat i believe should have a 12v feed but nothing is showing on either of the two large terminals, although when turning the ignition on a clicking sound is heared from the solenoid. After starting the vehicle i checked for voltage again nothing showing on meter.Have checked the meter with a spare battery that i have and is working fine.If any one can help i would be most grateful ...

Check the fusible links under the driver's seat and beside the battery...

Thanks dave, i,ve only had the vehicle a few months so most things on this vehicle are new to me.when you say fusible links can you describe what i should be looking for.Fusible links sounds like a inline fuse?.no doubt im totally wrong.

High ampage fuses. The one you want is in the middle - black with 80A on it. To remove it you need to pull away the fuse holder housing by loosening the two 10mm bolts that screw up into the bulkhead, then slide it towards you. To remove the fuse you need to remove the 2 screws from either side to release the spade-type fittings. Replacement fuses are hard to source and vary from about £3 to £5 each.

I have been told to run a wire from the + terminal on the battery to the relay positioned under the seat then test to see if there is a voltage reading at the glowplugs when the ignition is switch on and also i have been told that the glow plugs on my liteace should be 12v and not 7v as the 7v were only fitted upto 1988.98 onwards 12v is this correct?..

11v.

have you determined if you have a short yet by checking the fuse? If you run a live feed like that and have a short you could do some damage. I've got a similar problem and intend to work back from the plugs to look for the short.

Checked the high ampage glow plug fuse (80amp)and have found that the fuse has blown .If anybody can tell me where to get the fuse from i would be most grateful ,would the local factors keep them or would i have to go to Toyota.

Stuart

You will have to shop around, try the bigger factors and/or autoelectrical specialists. Take the old one with you (you can run the van without the fuse in). Price can range but in the order of £4. Get a couple in case you don't cracj the fault first time.

Managed to locate some 80amp fuses from an auto electrical supplier (prolec) who i believe are nationwide £2.50 each .good price i thought.Anyway the cause of my original fuse to blow ,could it be a faulty glow plug if so whats the easiest and quickest way to check the correct operation of the glowplugs.

Yes good price well done. Quick test? Connect them across a battery and see if they glow. Should start to go red within a couple of seconds.
