(Home) Fuel gauge

Hi all, hope you can help me (again!) I have a 1983 Townace Super Extra petrol. for some reason the fuel gauge has stopped working, i first noticed that it began to register low (ie 10 quid hardly moved the needle) then i filled it and the needle did not move. Once as the fuel started to get low, the needle did move back up but has returned to below 'E' and refuses to move I have no idea how these things work! One more question, will the orange warning light still work? i DONT want to take any chances!!

If the fuel gauge has died, any suggestions on sourcing a new one? remember my townie is OLD!

Thanks again for all your help

Hello Terry
It sounds like the sender in the tank has failed, but the orange light will still work because it's a seporate sensor.

Thanks Dave,

do i have to drop the tank to get to the sender? (groans inwardly...) is it an easy to get part? Im glad the orange light still will work! i have been driving VERY tense for the past 4 days...!

Yes, drop the tank. Make sure you disconnect all the pipes connected to the tank! There is a breather system that has several connections, well there is on the spacecruiser no doubt the Townace is the same. Same tank fitted to Spacecruisers so should be able to source... Don't forget if you have to order from Toyota to say VOR (vehicle off road), you'll get the parts quicker at no extra charge.
Best of luck.

Terry
Carry a gallon in the back as a back up, a mate of mine ran out on the motorway and was charged 120 quid for a gallon of fuel. To call out the AA is a waste of a call out just for petrol.

Terry.....my fuel gauge is doing the same as yours, so this post has been very helpful. I'm keeping mine topped up and using the trip counter to watch the miles, then topping up again. Safest way. Don't want to run out. x
