(Home) Unknown sender switch

well it had to happen ,,,starter would.ent work and yes it was 11 30 pm ,it was snowing .8 inches deep ,and 40 miles from home.o well get the wife to turn key and lay in snow tapping starter and away she goes.select 4 x4 and drive home past abandend cars and people walking home ...he he he what fun . so off with starter .thanks to ace archives ,and all who have contributed,a quick and easy repair was completed.all but one item ,with starter removed i see a switch ,sender ,broken away from block it apears to have melted out of casing,there are two wires and melted plastic hanging down..but all dasboard gauges seem fine . does anyone know what this sender is for all help appriciated

Just above the starter, blue/ green plug? That's the sensor for the glowplug timer. It's a bugger to get to, there's a coolant pipe in front of it. Shouldn't be much of a problem, if the thermistor is intact it'll be sensing ambient instead of coolant temp, but if not, the system defaults to a long glow anyway...

thanks david this explains a lot .i had assumed the long delay on the glowplugs was the norm ,the same as vauxhall uses ,this sensor was the only one i hadent changed ,and had i assume melted out off block when the previous owner cooked the engine,I WILL BE ON PHONE to my frendly toyota parts dept tomorrow.
