(Home) Parts list and questions for head gasket change

Hi All,

I've been combing the site for a week now researching my overheat problem, will be changing thermostat and head gasket. Below I've outlined a list of parts I will be ordering for the job, are there any other parts I might consider, other projects I might complete while she' opened up?

The head gasket comes separate from a complete upper engine gasket set, Is it necessary that I get the set as well as the single head gasket?

Parts list: head gasket and bolts, thermostat, water pump, new belts, temperature gauge refit.

Having done the job, and spent all that money on both gasket sets( £50 head - £70 Remainder ). I would say - It's probable that some gaskets you could reuse If your REALLY careful removing them. BUT, do you really want to strip something down after the rebuild ? to replace a leaking gasket ? You'll probably find the exhaust manifold gasket is essential as the current one (if laminated )will have separated into pieces. While I did'nt replace the water pump I assume that the remaining gaskets I had, do cover it. If your doing such a major overhaul, I would recommend their replacement. As you know coolant it an issue with these vehicles. Don't forget (a)a replacement radiator cap ( £8.50 )(b) your head gasket depth is dependant on whether your head has been skimmed in the past ( or if you intend to get it skimmed )and (c) to run a pilot drill down the waterways in the block to ensure their free from caulking.
If you've the head off what about reconditioning the injectors ?
The head bolts, I reused after determining that they could be torqued well in excess of the Toyota spec ( I think it saved about £40 )
I assume "new belts", includes the timing belt.
