(Home) Engine vibration

Hi all,

Mine is a LiteAce: 1991, CM35, 2C diesel, non-turbo, 1.8K on the meter.

Recently I noted, engine vibration has increased specially when idling. when I slightly accelerate, the whole thing start to resonate. specially the silencer, rear shutters and rear seats. I 1st thought this is happens because of bad silencer brackets and I replaced all 3. it reduced a little but still the vibrations are there. when the engine is running fast, it runs smoothly. I just want to know, whether this can happen due to bad engine mounts? How can I know whether my engine mounts are good or bad?

Anyideas / experiances ?

Thanks in advance,
Harshana

13 years old.....most rubber mounts will be ready for replacement - especially if they have been affected by oil contamination. If you lift the cover and watch the engine when you put it in drive or reverse - you will see how it moves. Also use a mirror etc. to inspect when stationary.
Have not done the hiace, but some years back new engine mounts tranformed the drive on a fiesta we had....let us know how you get on, as my hiace has big vibes onder 875rpm

chris,

when the engine is idling, it vibrates and I can see it without a mirror. U want me to use a mirror, because if mounts are good vibs are that difficult to see ?
please explain little more.

I think Chris meant you to inspect the engine mounts when stationary. If you cannot get to them by crawling underneath then use a mirror. Look for shears, cuts or bad cracks in the rubber mounts.

Harshana, sorry it was a bit vague.

I would do this...
Lift engine cover - start engine - foot on brake - engage drive and reverse a few times - maybe some gentle use of throttle. This will allow you to observe the engine rocking on its mounts. Hard to say how much movement is normal but if it looks at all scary.......

Turn engine off, get a bright torch and mirrors if needed. Inspect the mounts as Ian says. The rubbers should look almost as new - solid and unsquashed - Take a long hard look around the mounting areas generally from all angles - sometimes things can go unseen in haste -

On the fiesta mentioned above, the rear engine mounting rubber was contaminated with oil and about as firm as jelly. It didnt vibrate as such but the engine could be felt jolting back on take off

I had a similar problem on my Estima, the whole front end would resonate and buzz loudly - turned out to be an intercooler pipe under the bulkhead touching a heater pipe (steel) as the pipe expanded and moved - paricularly bad IIRC at about 1850 - 1950 rpm; a nifty bit of work pulling and tugging and bending sorted that out. Of course no intercooler pipe on the Liteace 2c - but after checking/testing the mounts as Chris & Ian have indicated above, you could check for any air ducts/pipes, stiff cables/linkages or anything that may bring the engine or components into direct contact with the body or chassis; had any work done recently around the time it started that may have disturbed something?

One way to check the mounts is to put a jack under the engine (use a piece of wood or an old book on the jack to prevent buggering up the sump) and gently jack up the engine. Don't go mad, you are just trying to see if the engine lifts up too far. If the mounts are shot the engine will lift up off them. If not you will get resistance as the engine tries to take the car up with it.

Dear Rob L.

I read with interest the vibration problem you described with your Estima. I think I have exactly the same prblem with a 93 Estima Lucida TD I have just bought.

I would be very grateful if you could give me any specific details on where exactly go about rectifying this i.e. how to get to the these touching pipes etc.

Thank you very much.

If anybody can tell me how to get to the intercooler pipe (and particularly where it meets a steel heater pipe) under the bulkhead of an Estima Lucida 2.2 TD I would be very grateful. I seem to have the same problem as Rob L in that there is a lot of vibration between 1800 and 2000 revs, whether or not the vehicle is moving. There is no vibration when the engine is cold. From what Rob says,it sounds like these 2 pipes may touch when the temperature rises and one or both expand and/or move. The engine itself does not vibrate .

Any help would be very welcome.

Thank you, Mark.

I have a 1992 lucida cxr10 2184cc diesel. I recently had the engine out and reconditioned it. The engine is back in & runs fine. The problem is that when i connect the auxiliary propshaft i get a lot of vibration. I suspect that this is due to the front rubber coupling being distorted as i did not support the shaft while the engine was out. I have attempted to replace it but have been unable to split it from the shaft. Also it looks as though it needs a major dismantling job to get it out once its split.
Can anybody answer the following:
1) Is the coupling the likely source of the vibration?
2) Whats the easiest way of removing the coupling?
