(Home) Coolant leak, now you see it now you don't

Hi All

been spending alot of money on my ace to get it ready for spring/summer.

this weekend went up to norfolk to visit family and she held water no leaks and very pleased on the sunday had a drive to a market and when i got out i notice green water was dripping (fast) by the oil filter got under and looked up trying to trace leak (with torch) and could not see, the leak was to high up this is the only leak she got now and it only leaks now and then ? so not easy to pin point, before i left to go back home (london) top her up (1 cup full)and drove 120 miles no problems stopped once to check leaks and no leaks to be seen ?. leaks only when getting hot but once hot it stops and when cold it stops, any one had this problem

It's worth knowing that water correctly drains (fast) there, and slightly passenger-side behind the front bumper, from condensation on the rear and front aircon evaporators (the bits that get cold) when they're in use. It's easily mistaken for a coolant leak.

But it's not normally "green" so this might not be the explanation this time, though it would explain your "now and then".

Hi Dennis,
If it some times leaks, and sometimes doesn't, then it could be related to the temperature of the coolant. If you stop the engine just as the thermostat is about to open, the coolant in the engine is at its hottest. If you stop the engine just as the thermostat is closing, the coolant is at its coolest. This wont necessarily show up on the temperature gauge though because that is the head temperature more than the coolant temperature.

I'm wondering if this is related to the new core plugs you have had fitted, as they are on the block and could be affected in this way.

many thanks,dave & dave

We have just found water leak, it was a joint behind the heat shield next to the turbo , the metal pipe connects to top of oil filter and heads towards engine block and goes out of sight behind a metal heat shield which then connects to a rubber hose it was this connection yhaty was leaking but only when hot,i could not get to this metal pipe to hose connection and took it back to garage who gave me a car to use while they fitted the van into the day of todays work , hopefully i have found all the leaks,
