i think i have found the thermostat housing it is on the passenger side of enging underneath the powersteering pump .do i need to remove this pump to gain access to the therm housing or can it be removed without touching the power steeering pump

The thermostat is located on the passenger side just above the air conditioning compressor there are 2 10mm bolts that hold it on, put a bit of copper grease to prevent bolts siezing for future. To help ease removal unclip the expansion tank & unplug the level sensor cable.

3Y engine, no you don't have to remove the pump, but it may help to slacken it and raise it out of the way.
