(Home) Cold starting (petrol)

Got a problem cold starting my 1989 LiteAce 2.0l petrol auto. It runs absolutely fine when warm and I've checked the electric choke actuator and it all works fine.
From cold if I place a hand over the carb barrels it will fire straight away suggesting too lean a mixture. Also once its running it idles pretty low.
I was wondering if it was the fast idle adjustment but can't seem to find info on how to adjust this.

Anyone help???

many thanks

Choke not choking enough. Fast idle should have nothing to do with starting, just keeping it going. If it fires and then dies perhaps fast idle. Get it tuned, carb will be set correctly, and emissions will be within the limits for MoT.

Hope I'm not sendin you a 'duff line' but I had a VW with similar prob. Turned out to be a restrictor tube in a vaccum line leading to the carb gunged up. If you have any vac tubes they may be worth pulling for inspection. Some carb cleaning aerosol may be handy too

Thanks guys.

On cold start it fires then cuts immediately. Then after a lot of cranking it chugs into existence but if I touch the throttle it dies again. Have to give it a minute then its ok.

Can't seem to find any info on the carb....

I'll re-check the vac lines but I suspect I'll end up going for a tune-up.

Once again - many thanks!

Check to see if a restrictors in the vac pipe or carb body were the pipe attatches. If fitted it reduces down to a pin hole so easily blocked.
Not familiar with the inside of the lite carb but another possibility may be leaky needle valve or a 'dropped' needle valve bush which would alter the float level.
Or maybe a worn cold start thermo. Sometimes finding something to extend the thermo rod....
Proper carb specialist are few and far between, but if you can find one in your area it will be well worth it - as they will be able to sort it without too much head scratching... which = less time = less cash.
Let us know the cause once found?
