hi, can anyone help. there is a thump noise as i start to accelarate, sometimes even when i take the foot of the brake and it starts to move forward you can hear a thud also. the townie runs great after that very smoothly , its just very annoying and i would like to get it fixed. does anyone know what the problem is and how much am i lookig to pay to repair the fault, thanks, andy.

There are a number of things to check but, is it an automatic? If so, have you checked the autobox fluid level ?

yes its a 2 l td auto 1993 , the auto box fluid level is right, thanks for advice.

Is it the same sort of dull thud that you get when putting it gear? or is it a more metalic thud?

its metallic sounding , like a clunk as it starts to roll , i think ill take to garage in liverpool area, any suggestionsanyoe, thanks again.

If its not drivetrain or engine mount related - could be a sticking rear cylinder/shoe - I had this recently

I have had this on a car years ago it was when changing direction normally it would clunk, ie the axle loading reversed, it soon deteriorated to the stage where it clunked every gear change.
Just a thought.

Could this "clunk" be the glow plug relay? This is quite loud but occurs after an ambient-temperature-dependent time delay. It puzzled me until I found out what it is. So the test would be whether it occurs if you remain stationary.

Otherwise, does it occur if you move off in reverse? and if you have 4WD does that, or Low ratio affect it?

could this be the anti-roll bar

my ace is going in tomorrow to have all 4 bushes renewed and it started off as a clicking and then after afew months went to a clunk,it would do this when i braked,if i turned a corner and pulling away
once she was going she was fine until i stopped and i would hear her clunking again.
