(Home) Blown turbo 8-(

Hi All,

It seems my Turbo is blowing (sounds like I need a new exhaust) I have just replaced the front pipe, this is how found it was making the noise! does anyone know if there is just a gasket I can replace or do I need a whole new turbo. I must say this could be the final straw and I may look to sell her. Shame as she is 100% reliable and never over heats, just the wife has had enough.
Cheers All

sorry, can't help you, but i may have the same problem.

can you try and describe the noise?

i assume when you say "blown turbo", you really mean "the turbo is blowing?" as in an exhaust blowing?

The turbo works just has the horrid noise you get when the exhaust has had it.. My wife's technical terms was "its far***g" LOL

Yes Patrick there is a gasket. It's a ridged metal one either side of the turbo. It could also be the exhaust manifold gasket though. If you remove the drivers floor you should be able to see where the blowing is coming from by puffs of smoke when the engine starts up.

Is this noise only there when accelerating, (when turbo is in use), or is it there all the time?

How loud is it?

I am beginning to think I may have the same problem. I did do a 2 hour drive just over a month ago and really pushed it all the way.

I cannot be 100% exact, but the noise I have has been there since roughly that time. (I think)

had the same prob, found it was the 4 nuts that are on the bottem of the turbo connecting to the first part of the exhaust. 2 had fallen off and the other 2 were loose. just tighten them up and you should be ok, had to cut a spanner down to do this as there is not alot of room down there...

Thanks all for the advice,
I have managed to get underneath and have a rough look and I think it is the metal gasket. I'll get the floors up when it not raining so hard. Perhaps it time to visit BBC spares again.
The turbo works, but i think is a bit sluggish.

Patrick,

can you try and describe the noise in more detail?
How loud is it?
When exactly does it happen?
Does anything make it worse?

It may help me diagnose what could be the same fault.

Hi Steve,
The noise is a blowing sound the same as if you exhaust is blowing, you can hear it on tick over but when you put your foot down it is at its loudest. I have noticed that the turbo light works but carn't hear the wine of the turbo because of the noise. I had the inspection plates off but could not see anything, It is quite grubby in there but the turbo looked ok!! I suppose it could be the manifold!?
Let me know your thourghts.
regards
patrick

Hi all , dont mean to intrude but when we had a townace we had exactly the same prob - a farty noise when booting it , normaly under load which made it a bit harder to see what was going on with ones head under ones "bonnet". check for soot and possibly try washing up liquid at the head to manifold gasket area , chances are this is where the fart originates as the manifolds on these things like to turn into bananas for no apparent reason - bye
