(Home) Black smoke

Hi guys!

Greetings all the way from Singapore!

I have been reading all your threads ever since I got my Liteace in 2001.

Would like to check if you guys are driving the newer version of liteace (3C-E engine) diesel?

It's a 2.2L diesel van. Wondering if any of your tricks/mods will work on my ride.

Been having black smoke whenever I step hard on the gas. Had just changed engine oil, diesel and oil filter. Each morning I step hard on the gas to clear the black smoke but seems like it alawys come back later on.

Any guys using Shell mineral engine oil? I been using it for the past 9 mths. It's stated ok for petrol and diesel engines.

Cheers~
B

Hi,
If these engines are fitted with wasted turbo's then there will be lag from the time you deliver max fuelling to the time the compressor delivers enough air to get the right air to fuel ratio. i.e. you will be running rich for a while thus producing black smoke.

The higher ambient temps in Singapore will contribute to a richer mix with air being less dense.

Rich diesels equate to high exhaust temps which means thermally shocking the exh manifold. If it cracks/warps and hence leaks from this, the turbo will not be able deliver the enough air leading to high smoke and poor performance.

Be careful - flooring when the engine is still warming up may cause the head to crack or the gasket to fail as the injection pump will be injecting much earlier giving rise to excessive cylinder pressures at higher engine speeds/loads ie flooring it.

Best wishes

Umm...
3C-E is non- turbo...

Don't know too much about the electronic pumps but I'd first of all replace the airfilter and put a bottle of injector cleaner through.
After that, it's a long process of looking for fault codes, then meauring the outputs of various sensors etc, as well as having the injectors serviced. Black smoke can mean either advanced timing or too much fuel, both of which you'll get more of when the engine is cold. As I recall, the timing isn't set with the dial gauge on the electronic pumps, you just match up marks on pump and engine.

Hope that helps!

Oooh...... is my face red!

Mind you, aren't all NA's smokey!

Hi B. My Litace has just been a martyr to black smoke. It could black out a street in seconds! I took mine to a local diesel specialist who found, amongst other things, that the diesel screw was fully out. Seems when I put the fuel additive in to clean it all out that it removed the crap of 15yrs. Previous service people had set it up to run with all this carbon etc, and once it was gone...black smoke. Hope you get it sorted mate. x

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the replies. I had the vacum device connect to the tubing after the power steering fluid container instead of the tubing before and apparently not much black smoke.

But less power when moving off. Trade offs, i guess.

Thank again!

Cheers
