(Home) Dirty black sooty windows

When we clean the inside of the car every couple of months, there`s always this black sooty stuff on the windows (which you only see `cos the cloth goes black... otherwise it`s invisible when driving).

Any idea what this is coming from (air con, heater, fan, intake, engine fumes???).

We`re having a baby soon and would prefer the little tyke didn`t have to breathe in this crap which is obviously flying around in there.

Cheers.

Worth checking that your exhaust tailpipe extends beyond the rear bumper. There is a trenendous vortex current behind our townies and this will carry the exhaust up and into the tailgate vents. (there are basic one way flap valves in these vents that frequently don't work) Mine did this until I extended the tailpipe a couple of inches. No soot since! ...Ray

Cheers Ray, will check that out. It makes sense actually as the tailgate on the Ace always get`s very filthy with `grease` spots... which I could never work out why before.

When I recently had my exhaust renewed, I asked if I could have the tail pipe longer than normal, for the above reason. It was pointed out to me that it is illegal to have an exhaust stick out beyond the main bodywork of a vehicle, and that police do pull you up for this. I insisted on having it done though, as I have a tow bar, so would try using that as an excuse.

"Oh, sorry officer, I thought the tow bar counted as part of the vehicle"

Hi Storm. I recently found a good deal of soot on the rear window and round about the back end of the van. I took the panel off the rear door and found most of the plastic steeting ripped/torn/worn out. So, with the aid of my trusty 'duck tape', I fastened some new plastic over the door and replaced the panel. No more soot. x
