(Home) Head gasket

Does anybody know where I can get a cheap head gasket from, last one was bought by the garage who helped fit replacement head but they have closed down. I have been qouted £75+VAT for a Payen gasket or £85+VAT for ADL item. These are trade prices but I think this is expensive, a while back someone mentioned a company who were doing parts like water pumps for £40 or so.
Any names or numbers would be of great help. Also should the Head bolts be replaced as the Toyota manual says only replace if broken.

Hi Azz,
Sorry to hear you are revisiting the head problem so soon.
I got my gasket and head bolts from www.ukcylinderheads.co.uk can't remember exactly how much but a complete head set and bolts was around £70.
To fit or not to fit the old head bolts is something of a personal choice. My choice was to fit new ones, but others have reused old ones and have had no problems.

Arshad,

2ct head gasket on its own, £40 from Toyota ( its not included with the other gaskets )because as they say " Ah yes sir, but your head may of been skimmed previously so we sell it seperately )
Other head gaskets in the head gasket set - rocker cover / exhaust etc: £70 from Toyota.
Head bolts £2.80ea - don't forget if you replace them you'll need two different lengths of bolt.
I did'nt replace all mine !
P.S ASK for trade prices - normally they'll give you 10% off.

Arshad,
Are you rebuilding the broken camshaft engine? What was the extent of the damage if you are?

I am rebuilding the engine, had the old cracked head just for this occasion, damage was 2 bent inlet valves replaced from my old head with 2 new guides. no piston damage or any damage to head itself. I have shown the broken belt to a number of people most have said that it was probably caused by the timing being out by one tooth. The mechanic who helped me with the rebuild the first time said it would not have run properly if it was out by a tooth. So I have 3-1 saying timing fault caused the belt to break.

Just an update on the cam failure & subsequent rebuild on my Townace, the findings of the engineers at Blueprint ADL found abnormal wear on the timing belt that was caused by the lower timing belt gaurd washer, also a buildup of debris in all the timing sprockets causing the belt to not be seating correctly. Also found abnormal wear in the water pump which was replaced Sept 03 at the same time as the timing belt. This item has been modified by Blueprint ADL suppliers with a thicker bearing housing, also price reduced from £65 + VAT to £40+ VAT. this has been sent back to suppliers for a warranty claim. (Hopefully once all back together I will drive it to Salisbury plain & let the Army have it for target practice!)
