Could be one of a number of things without being there to hear it. First try and locate the area where it's coming from. Is it inside/outside? Front or back? Is it a 'tinny' rattle? Is it rythmic to coincide with wheel revolution or engine acceleration? Does it do it on the overun in/out of gear? Try driving a short distance with the passenger seat up and see if that helps to identify it.

Diesel engines "rattle" anyway, part of living with an old one is hearing the rattles change and deciding whether they're important! You need to keep a very open mind ...
A famous one here is the radio antenna rattling against the roof gutter - can sound just as if it's coming from the engine compartment.
Twice I've found I've been worrying about the extra noise from the (4WD) front transmission because I've forgotten to unlock the front hubs.
Once I had the edge of the carpet trapped, leaving a crack under the pax-seat/engine-cover - that lets a lot more noise through that becomes less noticeable at higher speed.
The worst was a frayed a/c belt, with a flap slapping against the side of the coolant expansion tank at certain speeds. Funny thing, the level switch in that tank has always been unserviceable but the bashing made the light come on, so I got a low coolant light that I'd never seen before (in fact was convinced could NOT come on - the float is missing) at the same time as a serious "rattle" - scary.

Noise is coming from central to -front yes and its getting worse ,will try and make it to brean to let someone else listen(at jam)assuming veicle lasts that long"damm thing only passed M-O-T last week."

It's worth checking the Crankshaft pulley. May have come loose during emissions test on MOT.

oh yes----- when starting engine from cold engine now splutters lots of white smoke.."damm thing"RATTLE RATTLE like old style volks beetle.....

Hello Steve,
white smoke doesn't sound good I'm afraid. It usually means water or steam so you might have a gasket problem. Check the oil and coolant for the usual signs.

Check also for a loose timing belt or pulley- white smoke could be from retarded timing from slipped belt, rattle could be valve-piston contact.

But check ALL these things SOON, any of the above posted issues could result in a catastrophic failure...
