(Home) Towbar electrics

Just fitted towbar (thanks again, Ray) and need to wire the thing up, no meter, so can anyone tell me colour codes for lights? Believe indicators are Green/Yellow stripe and will link in from each side to relevant wire on 7-core. Are sidelights linked to Green or Green/white stripe? Will be then obvious that opposite colour code will be Brakelights. Is white/black wire earth? looks like to me. Might sound daft, but do I link in to relevant trace wires on car or to the earths - black/white? (been told that Toyota Imports are earth-switching . . . does it make a difference?) Brain cell confused now :( Will a conventional UK kit for flashers be ok? anybody know any idiosyncracies for the wiring? (Found out the Meaning of Life to a Townie owner . . . went over to Yorkshire for 3 days and it didn't use water or overheat!!) :) Regards to all. JohnN.

Anyone help with these two? Has Townie got 2 separate flasher cans (1 for indicators, 1 for hazard warning lights? I want to fit audible warning device for trailer electrics if possible but instructions say don't fit it is 2 sep cans); and do Townies have a dimming relay on lights/instruments (need to know as am going to fit transflash indicator relay to Townie). Thanks, John N.

Toyota use earth side switching for their headlights (as do most japs...) and some of the relays operate in the same manner. But once you get to the rear lights, everything is grounded in the normal fashion. Black/white is indeed earth, but you're best just tapping the towing socket to chassis.
I'd go for sidelights green, brakes green/white, but don't quote me- they do swap things around sometimes *rolleyes*
One flasher relay BTW- hazard switch is built into the combination switch.
What do you mean by dimming relay? Sides and instruments are powered by a relay, yes, but thay can't dim...

The Spacecruiser had a rheostat on the dash for dimming the dash lights. Not fitted as far as I know on the Townace.

Cheers Dave, found info most enlightening, thank god they don't swap the brake and throttle or steering wheel position!! - explains why when I put the demister on the doors all lock ! :) just thought it was oriental logic. But seriously, not sure what the instructions on the audible warning device meant by dimming relay at all. Had as Clive says a rheostat for dash lights on Saab and Vauxhalls but as we know Townies don't have 'em. Pal of mine says something wierd and wonderful about some vehicles having ''two-stage flasher relays'' but it's beyond my meagre braincell, don't think it applies to Townies. Had to have new exhaust eventually today (sorry Ray, but unavoidable) as trip to W.Yorks imminent tomorrow and previous repair gave up the ghost. Plumped for stainless from Permazaust, St. Annes, Nr Blackpool. They build them to fit the vehicle and were decent enough to break off and do the job immediately and even customised it so rear box and pipe come out at Left rear corner of Townie and not pointing straight to whatever you're towing, even put an angled-down tailpipe on for good measure. Found them extremely helpful and courteous. Price was £269 for complete system including front pipe, then you just take it back annually for checking. Only downer was that it seems that the gasket between the turbo and engine has been blowing also . . . Murphy's law, innit . . . so this is another job to be done. Any idea of part no and price of gasket and nature of job? Looks a bit aweing at first . . . the tarmac don't half scratch your chin!! :(
Cheers John.

The nuts might just've come loose- easy enough to get to, floor and heatshields out, but you WILL need an "S"-shaped spanner...
