(Home) New hiace supercustom

Hi Guys!

Having been on here for info on my old Space Cruiser and knowing that you guys come up with the goods, I'd just like to ask all of you if you have any useful info as regards my new Hiace SuperCustom (2770cc Non-Turbo Diesel, 4x4, Auto)

Stuff like service intervals, when to have the cam belt changed etc etc would be great, as (as usual) there no manual for it.

Regards,

Jon

Hi
I have the turbo 2wd version Super Custom Limited, I have the 1KZTE engine, on the top of my engine is a sticker saying the cam belt should be done at 100000 kilometres and the oil at 5000 kilometres, but mine is turbo so your might be different.
I would get the rad flushed and pressure checked, I didn't and I have regreted it big time. If they change the cam belt ask if they have disturbed the top hose to do so, if they have check the heater straight away and make sure it is roasting, if is isn't take it back and tell em to sort it, else it will boil.
Otherwise I enjoy mine, I have an auto which is just so lazy I love it.
If you have alloy wheels get locking nuts, the 4x4 ones fit, same threads.

Hi Jon.

I have the same as you. The non turbo is a 2779cc unit called a 3L. If you look under the carpet of the front passenger seat you will see the VIN plate with all the details.

Cam belt is at 100000kms and oil changes at 5000kms with filter at 10000km. I've changed the filter once and it was not easy. Perhaps because its a 4WD that is a large engine guard you have to get off first to get to the filter. You will also new a filter wrench because it's too close to the engine to get your hands round.

Does your have TEMS, heated seats or the hot cold box ? Has the speedo been converted to MPH ?

Also check the autobox oil level. To get best reading engine and box should be at normal opp temp, and engine should be running.

No heated seats but i have H/C box and a coffee pot too, I have TEMS as well, and a digi dash converted to MPH, sonar parking and a feature called joyful talk, which enables me to converse normally with my passengers without shouting,, I have yet to fit my new radio because i have been otherwise engaged with getting the head sorted out.( and TBH it is going to be a sod because I have an active amp I don't want to lose and hate vehicle electrics).
Do you have fully electric mirrors that fold too?

Just seen Jason's - well posh! Those Japanese know how to fit the toys in.
Cam belt, same interval on the Townace engine, I would recommend if you do not know that it has been changed then get it done, and not to wait until 100,000 has been passed.

Thanks Clive :)

Simon what's TBH ?

Mine is the same with Joyful talk and TEMS etc.

Although the Toyota Radio had a different connector on the back to normal UK Toyota stuff, I bought a UK spec Toyota to ISO radio converter cable. I then found two connectors in the dash that match up with them. All I had to do was pull them apart first. A Panasonic Radio went straight in, and all other toys like Joyful talk still work OK.

The biggest issue I have had was with the TEMS and the MPH speedo conversion. The dealer converted my speedo using a gear reduction device on the speedo drive from the gearbox. This work OK, but I later discovered that TEMS never did anything except when braking. I found that TEMS must be taking its vehicle speed reading from the digi dash and it therefore thought the van was not going very fast. When I removed the conversion device, the TEMS system became very active, and I get much less body roll in corners, so I've left mine in KPH.

Jon, you have the same model as me.
If you have the old style front exhaust section with the braided flexi section be aware that its no longer made. Toyotas replacement has a ceramic ball joint instead. The new section also requires 2 different brackets. The top one is needed but the lower can be modified with an angle grider and paint.
They also supply (at great cost) re-routed ATM cooler pipes to accomodate the new section. However the existing atm pipes can be carefully bent out the way in situ.
I find that the common 3 leg oil filter remover is a touch small, but fits perfectly after a good 'thump'.
Oil capacity - just under 6 ltr.
Found that mine benefitted from extra sound proofing to the front third of the vehicle.
Also the front wishbones have grease points as the townie. Easy on the moly grease though or the top ball joint cover blows up like a balloon.
Following someone's recomendation I found 38 psi all round to be a good pressure for the tyres.
Coolant capacity 9-10 ltr. - but once drained the block hangs onto 2-3 ltr if the block drain is not used.
A 'sleepy' supercustom site at

Give it a good service, underseal, some cavity wax and enjoy. Supercustoms most definately 'rock'! (Ooh LOL)

TBH is short for to be honest.
The point about the tems maybe what I am seeing too, I have never managed to feel any difference, i have a digital dash and if you are right about speed maybe back to kays it is then?
My ace has a pressure sticker inside the door it recommends 2.4 in the front 2.6 rear.
As for the radio i shall have to talk to my mate, he doesn't mind auto electrics, my I work in electronic systems and hate auto electrics, maybe because I am lazy i hate having to undo stuff for access especially when they are clipped together.
Recommend the yahoo site, you'll see piccies of mine there but it is no where near as clean as Chris'.

Thats because I wash mine Simon!! LOL

Simon

If you live anywhere near Bristol, I'll stick a radio in for you. I've had the dash out of mine several times now and know the score. I recently installed an in-dash DVD under the radio and a 6 inch LCD screen in the rear.

As for TEMS, I'm quite happy with KPH speedo, as my motorbikes all read KPH so am fairly used to it. If you do get the TEMS issue resolved at your dealer I'd like to know anyway.

I've just managed to buy a 3L engine manual and a 4WD supplement off some bloke on EBay FYI.
