(Home) Masterace problem

Hello board, Ive just bought a 1990 masterace surf from friend. I have 2 problems.

1 One problem is the smoke from the exhaust when stopped. Lots of smoke has poured out a few times when stopped at lights or reversing into a space.

2 Tha autobox doesnt seem to like reversing, it go in and then grabs and she lurches back all off a sudden, and in drive it changes fine in 1st 2nd but 3rd seems to take a while to come in.
Im very new to this and any help would be appreciated.

Hello Peter
1, It probably needs a good service including replacing the air filter.
2, Check the Auto Transmission Fluid (ATF) level. The dipstick is buried on the passenger side of the engine. Check level in NEUTRAL with the engine running at normal temperature immediately after selecting ALL gears for a few seconds each. You are describing a low fluid condition.
Top up through dip stick tube with a small funnel/ tube. (slowly)
If the colour of the existing fluid is not red, it would benifit from a drain/ refill.
hth .. Ray.

Thank you Ray.
I have checked the fluid when it warm and in park only, its above the hot mark by at least 10mm.
I must admit it probably could do with a service, i only got at on Friday with no tax or Mot but it went through the mot fine, the smoke is blue/white in colour

Too much ATF is as bad as too little. Change it, adding to the CORRECT level. Also check the adjustment of the selector cable.

On the smoke issue, as Ray says a service might help, but check the breather hose that comes out of the valve cover atop the engine. Kinks or blockages can cause smoke at idle because pressure builds up in the crankcase and forces oil by the turbo seals...

can any one help solve a mystery. we were advised by our garage to replace the lower ball joints at the front of our masterace surf (1991 reg. 4wd). we ordered in theparts from BBC spares. However on removing the ball joints the garage has found that they are different to what Mr. BBC spares sent. Theyare not as expected, a horse shoe shaped ball joint. Mr BBC spares belivies they should be standard for townace modles, the horse shoe shaped ball joint covering sverel years of the townace model. Can any one shed any light on this and where we might be able to track down the corect ball joint.
Thanks

There are several differences between the 4X4 and 2WD - maybe that is one of them?

You should have started a new thread for this - you'll get more people seeing it!

yes, sounds like bill has sent out a 2wd joint. the 4wd one has a solid, rhombus- shaped base... the item you're looking for is handed, too. about £50 each from the dealer, not sure about pattern ones.
