We have a G reg Masterace Surf 4x4 automatic Diesel.
Last weekend we needed 4 wheel drive to get off a camping field. We turned the hubs pressed the switch(which didnt light up) then nothing. There was a clicking noise when we pressed the switch on and off somewhere in the back.but no 4 wheel drive. The high and low lever doesnt move it feels stuck.
We have never tried 4x4 mode before,

Sounds like a lack of vacuum. Trace the little vacuum hose back from near the air cleaner, through the tank, and into the body behind the side door, then the re's two hoses coming out and going to the actuator on the transfer case.
My guess is that someone has disconnected the hose during servicing, probably at the engine end.

The low-ratio lever won't move unless you're in 4x4 and the gearbox is in neutral, BTW
