Is there enough gas in the system? Sight glass is under nearside front wheel arch.

The system will have a low pressure cut out to protect the compressor from damage when the gas level is low.

When you say its just stopped working. Is it that you've only just started using it now that the weather is attempting to warm up ! and that it worked last time you tried it some months before.

Its good practice to run the system at least once a month even when not needed to keep all the bits moving and lubricated. It's also perfectly normal for a system to loss gas over time.

An aircon mechanic can diagnose low gas very quickly. They put a couple of pressure gauges on the system and see what happens when you try to run it.

Excuse me butting in here. :)

How much should I expect to pay for topping up the gas in my 2wd 1990 Townie?

I don't want to get ripped off.

You can't simply 'top up'. You have to extract the existing gas then inject 1450g (if coolbox fitted) of new gas.

If you haven't had this done before then it's odds on that you had R12 gas which is usually replaced by 134a with or without additives.

Some engineers will recommend you change the seals and filters which will add to the cost. Some simply include an additive.

Last year I paid £59 for an R12 regas. It would have been £49 for a 134a regas with additive. Seal renewals can add anything like £100 on top.

Technically it is illegal to use R12 now and it has been unavailable for the past 3(?) years. So count on a conversion to 134a being required. Prices will obviously differ around the country and by engineer/company but £60 plus seals seems to be about the average.
