(Home) Gearbox cable adjust ment

my automatic 1886 space cruiser is reving to about 4500 revs before changing gear can any body tell me do I tighten or slken the cable to bring it down.
It was OK till I took the cable of to remove the rocker cover

On the hiace I would slacken it some.

There should be a little blob of solder attached to the kickdown cable. When you press the throttle to the full power (engine off!) the blob should be between 0-1mm sticking out from the end of the cables outer collar.

The cable it's just for kickdown, its control line pressure and lets the box know how much demand it should be dealing with . Incorrect adjustment will stress the gearbox and cause excessive wear to it.

However, we find that the best changes occur in a Townie anyhow with the cable loose- a slight sag of inner cable between the mounting and the throttle lever. I believe this to be because the spirally wound outer cable lengthens slightly over time (the coils are pulled apart at any bend/ kink)

Also, if the kickdown cable is ever replaced, the new one doesn't have the stop crimped on- see the procedure in the manual for marking the inner with the slack just taken out of it...
