(Home) Space cruiser carburettor

My 1987 Space Cruiser Model F (46K miles only) has recently developed a fault were it would cut-out on tick over. I am suspicous of the new BP super unleaded petrol that I had recently filled the tank with. I took it to my garage and had a service done thinking that it would clear the fault, but the fault was still there. The garage has tried to adjust the carb but it either runs too rich or too weak. The rev counter used to be on 800 rock steady, now after adjustment it varies between 1200-1500 and still cuts out occassionally. The garage thinks I need a new carb. Any help would be appreciated.

Afternoon John, can't offer any technical help but I have a donor Space Cruiser, 1988 model F. I am not prepared to start dismantelling it, but it is free for anyone who wants it. It is road worthy and MOT'd. Let me know if you are interested.

I had the same trouble on mine had a moble tuner out and he found an air leek at the bottom of the carb on one of the caskets (he sprayed it with carb cleaner to find leek) changed casket and things ok

just a small adjustment/clean needed somewhere.
what has the garage done to it? mine lasted 250,000 miles and still ok when i sold it!
whip the air cleaner connection off and with the engine running squirt some carb/fuel cleaner directly into the carb - should get a nice cloud of black smoke - may need a few goes and beware of any blowback flame from the carb, don't lean over the top or you may lose your eyebrows!
if that cures it fine get it tuned.
if the problem is not as bad repeat.
still a problem get the carb looked at by a specialist, who may strip and overhaul it - get a price first as it can cost!
hth.

Hi Jim. Really interested in your cruiser offer as we here in the SCOTTISH CHAPTER could do with it as a donor vehicle.. where are you ? Please let me know if you still have it and any relevant info on it thanks regards Iain

Thanks for all the replies, I don't want to mess with carb myself, especially since a garage has had a go already. The garage did spray the carb and tried to flush out any dirt that might be the cause, but of no avail.
I 'm not sure what to do but I could take it to a toyota dealer, or get a mobile tune-up, or try another corner garage in Birmingham.
Any suggestions lads.

Mobile Tune best option in my opinion.
