Phoned the 0800 Liverpool Victoria number today. They said they had been forced take many Townaces off their books as the Govt said they were insuring too many. Consequently they now only insure manual Townaces.
- (#10743) Malcolm Stroud, 10 May 04 04:05

that sounds like iffy advice. I thought that the problem with LV was that they only insured automatic Townaces and that they didn't recognise manual ones. Secondly, since when did the government place quotas on insurance companies?

I'm not saying you are wrong but that maybe the person at the LV call-centre was talking out of his/her exhaust pipe.

Very helpful - have just traded-in my Spacecruiser for a 1991 Townace. Lifesure quoted £222 for Comprehensive with Protected NCD which was just £25 more than I was paying for the Spacecruiser. Quote was for a single driver 9 years no claims and immobiliser with £300 excess. They also offer instalment option (with interest of course).

Nearest other quote was Tesco at £264 with £500 excess.

Quotes are for Worthing area.

A further twist to the insurance saga. My Spacecruiser insurance was through Hill House Hammond and underwritten by NIG. Hill House Hammond re-quoted me about £430 and required I upgrade the immobilser to Cat 1. Townace Insurance through Lifesure is also underwritten by NIG. I therefore queried the £50 cancellation fee on my old Insurance and Hill House Hammond branch have agreed to waive the charge.

Malcom
LV definately would not insure my manual townie as a super extra! in fact I found them very frustrating in their lack of knowledge / understanding. Also they said my vehicle reg document needed to have TDi on it. In the end I went with Footman James £204 Fully comp no immob required and all the other extras protected NCD etc

hi. I am a new townace royal lounge owner and was able to get insured with LV with no problems. I have a 1991 2lt manual diesel. They were very helpful and not expensive at all. cant understand why some people are having problems with LV.

- (#10743) craig bowden, 25 May 04 10:17

I'm surprised they insured a manual royal lounge! they have it on their list as an automatic and they have said many times that if it doesn't exactly match what's on their list, they wont touch it.
My guess is that as insurance companies try to increase their market share, people like us with imports seem to jump on them pretty quick. Then they realise that they have a disproportionate number of imports, which they don't like because new spares for repairing accidents are expensive. Then they make all sorts of excuses for not insuring them. Eventually they get the balance down and start to take them on again.
It was once said of Bank managers that they were quite happy to lend anyone an umbrella when the sun is shining, but want it back the moment it looks like rain. Maybe the same is true for insurance companies?

As Dave says plus bear in mind that the quality of call centre staff can vary considerably. The majority simply have a telephone and a computer screen in front of them. If the information isn't on the database then they can do one of two things a) ask a senior more experienced colleague for help or b) get rid of you asap because the longer you argue the toss, the lower their call quota gets.

I personally haven't had a problem with L&V but as my Royal Lounge fits their database spec exactly I may have had something to do with their setting of the spec. in the first place. However, I've had some right runarounds with Direct Line with my other cars but to be fair to them, the majority of their call centre staff have tried to be helpful. Maybe they operate a different bonus scheme for their staff?

I think the moral of the story is to be persistent.

Hi Ian,
have you tried dorset insurance for you MR2? they do the MR2 drivers club insurance.

- (#10743) dave Bright (Bournemouth), 26 May 04 02:01

Thanks for the thought Dave but

Dorset are mainly aimed at young drivers with modified turbos where no-one else will touch them. Unfortunately I don't fit into either category. I actually have an unrivalled deal with Direct Line where they have taken my 9+ years NCB and applied it to both my MR2 and the wife's Mazda 323. £370 and £280 respectively including protected NCB and legal and named drivers. The Townie with L&V cost me just under £200 last January for similar cover. So insurance wise I'm feeling pretty smug.
Still a lot of money though :-(

- (#10743) Ian Dunse (Derbs), 26 May 04 04:45

Dave

sorry forgot to add. Dorset are pretty expensive for standard spec cars. Even with my 10% IMOC discount they couldn't shake a stick at Direct Line and many of the other companies like Tesco etc

- (#10743) Ian Dunse (Derbs), 26 May 04 04:50

Hi Ian,
£200 for insuring a Townace doesnt sound like much, but three cars just short of £1,000 is a fair sized bill. I'm also pleased to see that I am not the only one who can insure a Japanese import for less than my wifes uk mazda. I still can't work that one out.

I wasn't to knowledgable on Dorset insurance because I only stumbled on them recently. I thought I would give them a ring near when my insurance is due, then I saw the bit about the MR2 club and thought of you.

At the risk of opening my self up for a real drubbing, I guess that insurance risk is a much overlooked aspect as well. Young boy racers, a bad history, or an area of high car crime may also bring out the excuses list in the call centres. But thats not to suggest that anyone who finds insuring townaces difficult has some dodgy history you understand.
