Sounds like the usual problem associated with alternator/regulatoir failure. See the archives for more details of this problem.

Phil,

it could be one of many problems, start by checking things that will not cost you money, like, are all the fan belts on and not loose, look at the battery (on flood behind drivers seat pull back carpet and undo inspection panel)are the connections good , get a volt meter and set on DC 12 VOLTS put meter between + - battery terminals and you should get and readinf of 12vdc then start her up and at 2000rpm you should see the reading go up to 14.2vdc if you donot it may indicate a fault on charging circuit, if you do get 14.2vdc then i would look more carefully at the battery
(how old is the battery)take it to a car battery shop and they will short circuit test it and tell you on the spot if its any good.

i have just brought my first townace, the price was right and i expected a few problems. the heater does not work, just blows cold air (aircon seems to work ok). also i understand the radio will not work, it's a radio/cdplayer, can i get the cdplayer to work on its own?
thanks in advance for any replys

Fist it would be a good idea to start a new post then more people will se it. the heater problem is it the front one if so it could be an air lock, you have to fill the system really slowly or under the front of the van is the valve that controls the water flow it can sometimes seize, get someone to operate the slider will you look under neath you should see the cable move, or the matrix could be blocked and need a good flush though with a descaler, not sure about the radio?...could you include model and year of van as it helps to know what the spec is...
