(Home) Hiace supercustom

Hi guys!

Thanks for all your replies on my previous thread about my new Hiace.

I have a slight (maybe) problem with it though... :-(

There has been a fuel patch on the drive for pretty much all the time we've had it (a couple of weeks now), but had my mate (a mechanic) look at it today. I was hoping it would be something simple, but it turns out that it's the diesel pump that is leaking.

Do any of you knowledgeable folk have any similar experience/tips etc about this? My mate says it's beyond his skills, and has suggested I take it to a diesel specialist.

I live in the North West (Cheshire), and have managed to locate a place in Warrington, who will have a look for an hour's labour plus VAT, but he warned me over the phone that if it is something that entails removal of the pump, it will be expensive! :o(((

Any tips/stories/info/help gratefully received.

Cheers,

Jon

PS - SuperCustom has done a shade over 100k kms - so I guess I should be getting the cambelt done in fairly short order eh? How much work is involved in this (hours)?

Oh, almost forgot!

It's a 2770 non-turbo diesel, with Automatic Transmission.

Cheers

I'm guessing it's similar to the Townace pump and if so you probably have a leaking gasket. A number of owners on here have resolved the problem themselves but by all accounts it is fiddly and you may be better taking your mate's advice and take it to a diesel specialist.

100k kms - yes get the timing belt changed. Allow the best part of a day and inspect everything else while you have the floor out. Change the other belts as well. And if I was Dave Bright I'd be advising replacing the water pump but you've heard it all before.

Thanks Ian,

Does anybody know if it IS the same as the Townie pump?

Does anybody have any prices for the gaskets etc?

I'm not sure I'm up to doing the cambelt meself, but my mate could do it... I was just trying to get an estimate of how much it's gonna bash me wallet.

I'm planning a trip to La Belle France this summer (Eurocamp-ing). Any advice for motoring over there (apart from the obvious - fill up the tank before I leave!!!

Cheers,

Jon

No don't no if same. Maybe one of the Hiace owners on here can verify.

France? No don't fill up before you go. Fuel is cheaper over there.

Bon vacance

It won't be the "same" pump, but it'll be externally identical. Camplates, governor springs, checkvalves etc will all differ, so you can't interchange pumps between different models, but the same repair principles and parts such as seals etc will apply.

that is unless it's an electronic pump...

Chris is the bloke to ask with regards the hiace, he has the same engined one as yours, mine is the turbo one, he is advising a guy on the hiace site which resides on yahoo groups, I can't post a link from here I have no access, I will try from home tonight.

Motoring in france, great love it, make sure the car has been well serviced, especially the cooling circuits, you must carry bulbs and a triangle too, I think a first aid kit might be needed but this can consist of a bandage and safety pin.
I presume you are going to go via Calais, if so look for Cite Europe, you can fill up there under cover, and you'll save a paltry 20pence a litre roughly, so if you have a 60 litre tank like mine that is a worthwile saving.

Where are you going? Me and mine have been on the tenting hols many a time and really enjoy it.

Back to driving.....
On the motorway watch your mirrors, you will normally have some turd 6 inches off the bumper if in the fast lane, only unlike the UK they will be in a 607 pug instead of a BMW.....
Don't drink/drive over there, you'll find french jails harsh compared to ours.

If the guy doing the cam belt disturbs the cooling whatsoever for access make sure the heaters get hot, the heater matrix is very high in these and prone to air locks, air lock in the matrix = very very big bills.
The spares on these are generally quite obtainable, the only thing I have had a problem with so far is a window which cost me my hiace holiday to france last year, I ended up taking my old escort( no ac, just windows in 35 degrees of heat!).

Bit disjointed but I am typing in a hurry and on the QT, else I get caught yet again on the net.

Sorry Boss! :p

Trevor over at

http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/HiaceSuperCustomWagons/

had the same problem with the deisel pump.
Then he took it on holiday and by the time he got back the leak cured itself?!
Thought I'd seen some pics in the archives here of the pump fix (o-ring).
I do have the same unit as you, but rather than having a solution I'm now just wondering when mine will start leaking!
The Toyota engine manual RM123E (2L, 3L) is worth buying at around a tenner (from toyota) - as this also covers the pump. A quarter of the book is all injection system.
Its not for the hiace per say, but the power unit as fitted.
You could try a meths soaked cloth to degrease the area and lots of tissues and a mirror etc. to try and pinpoint were the deisels coming from exactly.
