(Home) Faulty heater aircon fan....help

i have a toyota super extra town ace and i have just done a full service with air filter, oil filter and fuel filter, seat up head down usual thing. finished the job and sat in the blazing sun shine and decided to blast the sweat away with a bit of cool air....?

switch clicks in air con lights up but no fan blowing - traced all the wires they seem okay checked all the fuses they seem okay - although i do not know which one connects to the fan control. fan was working perfectley yesterday.

what could be the problem? what do i connect up on the fan to check that it is working ie ....live / neutral etc?

have i caught some hidden wire somewhere?

rear air con / fan works in the rear okay.

can any one help before i have to strip out the dashboard.

over to you folks with baited breadth!!!!!!

You do know to turn the fan on to enable the aircon?

Also you may have climate control, or is that only on 7-seaters. I think the sign is that the Hot/Cold control is marked 20-25-30 Deg C as well as blue-red and this will affect whether the fan runs, at what speed, and whether the a/c runs.

The top lever, for which vents you want air from, can also turn off the fan - at least it does on mine (don't know if this is climate control dependent) if it's in the middle position and the engine hasn't warmed up.

The Fan is not operating that is the problem!!!

Can anyone suggest how to test fan without removing from dashboard?

Is there a seperate in line fuse?

The blower isn't blowing!!!!

Forget the Air Con for a minute

The Fan is not working when switching on the blower for demisting/heating or just blowing cool air in the cab.

The sliding switch (left to right) which controls speed of fan/air flow is clicking on and I can feel a solenoid clicking in but the fan is not actually coming on.

The switch for the air con lights up when pressed into on position so assume not a fuse problem there?

Check the circuit breakers beside the fusebox. Oval thin metal type things with a little hole in the top. Stick a pin, paper clip, thin wire into the hole to reset.

Then there's a fan speed control resistor that can give trouble. The archives describe where it's located inside the air duct somewhere.

If it's not working at any speed, check the circuit breakers and then suspect the switch. If either are goosed, the aircon will be disabled anyway...

Hi Steve
Lets go back to basics for a minute! I have a 1990 vintage townie and when I had fan problems I removed the nose cone and rhs headlamp to gain access to the fresh air intake. This revealed a good portion of a jap newspaper page embedded in the fan cage causing the fan to turn slowly. There is no filter fitted to the intake so just about anything can work its way in. While in there you can lubricate the bearings with a spray oil / grease and check rotation is free. Photo can be supplied if required. Ray...

oops ... Should have read lhs headlamp in previous post.

ray

i still got no fan foe the last 3months and looking at all, like fuses,re-settable circuit breakers, fan speed switch.

i took off the nose cone and took out n/s headlamp to see the fan air intake and i could see the fan blades
i put fan on and it would not turn so i put my hand up the air intake to move the fan and it went to full speed (almost took my fingers off)so i can safely say my fan problem is within the fan unit,i then removed the glove box and looked at the fan and how its fixed to the fan housing (by 3 screws)if you remove the screw in position 4 o'clock (screw nearist to cool box)
gently pull it away at the screw end it will come away in your hand and will uncover a secret inspection hole at the back of the fan motor,(make sure the fan is off)
i put my finger in the hole and pulled out a lump of hair and dirt i then sprayed electrical contact cleaner into this inspection hole and the dirt just flowed out, only had a small amount of contact cleaner so i need to buy a new tin,my fan is working better then before and i intend to investigate is more armed with a new tin and some wire wool to clean the bit that the brushes go on

Dennis
Glad the fan works!
Sorry about the fingers!!
Air-Con shouldn't be far away now. Ray

Ray, I think you're mixing up (I did the same at first!) Steve, who asked for help originally, with Dennis, who's helpfully telling us how he fixed his own fan, in case that helps Steve or anyone else.

hi folks well spent most of yesterday morning checking through all the fuses, wires, clips fan motors inspecting this and that pressing in and resetting this and that with no sodding joy what so ever.

totally baffled and thoroughly peeeed off i decided to go out and do my daily work and so with half the lower dash taken off and the glove compartment up ended on the floor i set off down the road

guess bloody what? fve pot holes later and waheyyy we have a blast of air from the fan ducts and then about six pot holes later not wisper.

so it's something loose or catching?

therefore does anyone know where i can trace the wires too and has anyone tried turning the fan on with a seperate live feed from a twelve volt supply if so where do i connect upto.

a big thank you to all that have offered their words of wisdom very much appreciated glad to see that you all still have your digits intact and that there is every chance i might resolve this problem eventually!!!

As we know, Aces differ. So this schematic may help but may not be exactly right ...
