(Home) Radiator

not that i get any problems with overheating, but as i have noticed that my heater has become less inefficient.

is the townie radiator the same as a hi-ace?
if not, how much have people paid for a recore?

Just had my townace radiator recored cost about £250 plus labour to have it fitted

Wakefield radiator services will recore a townie rad for just over a hundred pounds ( i got mine made about 20mm wider to edge my bets with the cooling situation)
Fitting is about a three hours job in and out because the floor has to come out and go back in plus filling
with antifreeze and a run to shake the air out

If the heater is less efficient I would check your level under the pressure cap....possible it may contain some air in the matrix

paid £105 for a recore, did the remove/refit myself, not a bad job, but a pain getting it back in, needs a lot of jigling.

The coolant level is fine. Right up to the brim as always.
Have no problems with overheating, no problems with varying temperature.

When I say it is not performing well, what I mean is that the heater does not supply air which in my opinion is warm enough.

It was fine when I first bought it about 4 years ago.

Perhaps it's the chalk in the water we have in Kent?

When I replaced my thermostat I noted it was opening very early. (approx 14 deg before the new one). If your stat is old it may be allowing water through the rad early, therefore overcooling a little...which would affect the heater.....only other reasons would be air in the matrix or clogged matrix.
You could also visually check the valve that allows water to the matrix...to ensure its fully open when control is set to hot

I suspect that it is a clogged matrix (I take it you mean the radiator matrix?)

The water in this part of Kent is extremly hard and full of chalk.

Am I right in thinking there is NOT a seperate heater matrix?

My 14 year old Townie just passed an mot, with no problems at all.

Can someone confirm that there is no heater matrix on a 1990 2wd 2ltr townie?

Yes there is a heater matrix (or should be). In fact two, one at the front up behind the dash, two water pipe feed this easy to see from underneath, one (the feed) has a valve that is operated by the controls. The other is behind the driver for the rear cabin.
Well done on the MoT .

Is it easy to get these matrixes out for a spring clean?

Front one is buried in the dash, if you have a coolbox it will be one big job, still a pain without the coolbox in the way.
Rear one is just a difficult but at least you can see what you are doing.

Also if you have a hot/cool box, that will have another heater matrix.
