(Home) Unknown noise

Greetings all,

My townie started making a noise not long ago and i do not know if it is something to worry about. First of all, let me say this, when I first take off in the morning I hear a blowing type sound for a few seconds and then it disappears. I was told this was the vicous coupling and very normal. Now. After I drive for a while at a high speed 100+k I hear a noise that sounds like a blower coming on. At first I thought it was a change in the road causing a different noise to come from the tires, then figured out that was not it. If i stop the townie and start moving again, I hear the same noise like in the morning, but it does not go away after a few seconds. It does eventually stop, even when driving at high speeds. but then will start again after a while. Is this something to worry about or is an extra fan or something that comes on when the engine starts getting hot. If this is the case, why did it just start. I would like to state that I just had the fuel pump and water pump changed.

Thanks
Mervin

Hello Mervin, nice to hear from you again.
This all sounds quite normal because the viscous fan cuts in and out according to the temperature of the radiator. Once the thermostat opens and the hot coolant is pushed out, the heat triggers the fan.
You will hear it first thing in the morning as well. I think its because when its cold the fluid in the coupling is thicker. As the fan turns the slippage causes the fluid to heat up, then it can start to work the coupling properly

You will hear it in the morning (or when its been stood after a run) due to 'heat soak' from the engine after its turned off. It will happen anytime the engines turned off at its full operating temp.
Gives me the illusion of having masses of power....well, for a few seconds anyway..

This is commonly known as "the V8 roar" and is a very good indication that the fan is working correctly! Ray

Thanks for all the answers. As I understand, it is normal when I am on a trip and it makes this roaring noise for ten or fifteen minutes every hour or so. It is fiarly loud and I didn't hear it before. That what was worrying me. If it means everything is working correctly, I rejoice in the noise.

Mervin, I had a partialy blocked radiator replaced in my Town Ace and since then my fan makes a very load roaring noise. Before I had the radiator replaced I had no noise. The garage that replaced the radiator told me that the reason why I now have a roaring fan is because the radiator is now getting hotter and the fan has to get rid of the heat faster so the fan is working harder than it used to. You say you have had a new water pump fitted, your cooling system is probably now working better than it was so your fan is working harder than it did before. HTH.
