1989 toyota lite 2.0 td auto 2~wd

i have been searching around for the best part of 2 hours on the archives etc..
1. the egr, can it be blanked off with out any major problems on the engine? i know it has been done on the nissan vans with no major problems, and reduced the black smoke.

2. i have looked around the vac pipe screens, i have a block mounted on the n/s engine bay, the forward facing "terminal" has no pipe on it. i cant find anything that should be attached!!!! the pics i have found dont show this on them. could this be the black smoke prob?

engine recently waterpumped, timing okay.

thanks in advance

Yes it can be blanked off with no probs, in fact you might be surprised at the accumulated dirt that results in the inlet manifold when you take the pipe off. Two substancial oval plates suffice as a blank - one on the exhaust the other on the inlet manifold.
If you want a template e mail me adgo6@aol.com

The black smoke you talk of, is it when it chages down a gear or all the time?, because if its all the time its usually an injector or a mucky air filter.
If its just when you change down (I realise its auto) then a certain ammount of black smoke is normal, if its excessive its usually the boost setting adjustment on the top of the pump - but dont touch it just yet its super sensitive.
